Hello New to the page and hoping to get inspiration. Word for March is “Answers”. I am having an uphill struggle, changing my food, I teach dance 4 days a week for at least 3 hours. Eating healthy but cannot get my sugar levels down. Lactose and Gluten free. Don’t eat sugar. Don’t drink. Very frustrating.

welcome.gif...what kind of dance do you teach? Keep coming back here, you'll get some good ideas about how to get your sugar levels down...others have done it and so can you.

Went to a class called PowerMode. It was interesting....a combination of aerobics and strength training. Truthfully, I thought I would sweat more but oh well..... Don't know what the plan is for tomorrow, probably do something at the clubhouse. Update: I want to get some grapefruit to take home, Wynne Dixie has some REALLY red ones like they had a few years ago. So....Vince is willing to take me to a spin class at the Y. In a sense, I think he's feeling somewhat sorry for me. Wonder how long this'll last????

Vince and I TALKED about staying longer maybe next year. I did find out that I can use the Y down here 14 times before I have to pay some fee. Even if we stay for 2 weeks, I doubt I'd use it 14 times. I don't go there on the weekends so that's only 10 times, and that's assuming I go every day. There are days when I don't go.

miriam - you are talking to a totally ignorant person as far as plants go. Is thyme the one that has those pretty blue flowers? It looks like something is growing over the stones, is that thyme? Around here (NC) people stop (in their cars) to let a funeral pass. Sometimes I think this can be dangerous, maybe going slower would be better. When we first moved down here that was the first time I'd ever experiened something like this. I had no idea. To be honest, if someone doesn't stop in front of me, I probably wouldn't, mainly because I wouldn't realize that there was a funeral on the opposite side of the road.

Kim - I like to work outside. Not that I'm good at it, mind you. I also like laying in my pool. I know that doesn't burn many calories -- but it does keep me from eating! I do enjoy bowling -- even if I do s****. When I get a strike (which doesn't happen often), I usually do a dance. Our team is known as "the twisters". When I was on it the first season, a lady from the senior league I had been on knew of me and so she gave the team the name "the twisters". People didn't understand why it was named that until they saw what happens when I get a strike.

I'll have to ask again, does anyone have any idea why one of my feet is swollen and the other one isn't?

Pole Penny - what a story! I'm in awe

Yvonne - great ideas for Mary!

drkatie - awesome NSV. Doesn't something like that just make you feel so so good?

Sylvia - feel better fast. I certainly hope your son doesn't get any worse. I swear, your heart is as big as Joyce's

Karen - woo hoo walking past those cakes! Sure hope the crackers work for your daughter.

Alison - I agree, I'd tell Doris "I have plans". You deserve time for yourself

DJ - I love soup, too. I usually make some and have it in the freezer for emergencies. But like you, I won't be sorry to see soup season go bye-bye. Now that summer is coming, my freezer is going to be (as usual) packed with corn on the cob, strawberries, grapes, beets -- really just about anything that can be frozen.

It's supposed to be in the 80's tomorrow so I'll probably go down by the pool some. We also need to go back to the ceramics place. I have no idea why they didn't pour the mold of the dolphin since I told them I wanted it. But supposedly they poured it Friday so I'll pick it up tomorrow (they were closed today)

Michele from NC now in FL (but not for long.....boo hoo)

Welcome, so glad you joined us. Sugar can definitely rear its head in many unexpected places. Some of the more obvious is fruit, good for us but can be loaded with sugar. Keep in mind that all carbs register in our blood as sugar so therefore pasta, starchy vegetables, rice, bread, etc. will raise your blood sugar levels. If you log all of your food in the journal on MFP it will give you protein, carb and fat content along with a couple of other things. This can be very helpful if you review daily to determine where you high carbs are sneaking in. All of these can be eaten daily but perhaps limit to a couple of servings per day. Hang in there. You have found a great group of caring supportive women.

Thank you, Barbie, for the send off into March. I'm in awe of your daily steps. I definitely need to push a little harder on my steps.

I could not find any February goals, I assume I did not post any as we were in the motor home driving back from Arizona. I'll reflect on my goals for March and post them in the morning.

We got quite a thunderstorm this evening, lots of thunder and lightening and pouring rain and wind. Thankfully it did not last too long. Our next door neighbor's Bradford pear tree is almost in full bloom. Hooray for Spring!!

    Love you ladies, goodnight

Only throwing a few thots out there, but I know my left foot/ankle often swell and not the right. You may have done a minor twisting/injury without being aware of it. Try keeping it elevated when possible and ice it. If it is still swollen or hurts and is bothersome you might call your doctor when you get back home. Sorry not much help. I do wear compression thigh-high stockings every day now. My ankles still swell but no where near as much as they used to. This is a problem I have had all of my adult life.

Barbie: Thanks for starting us on our new thread for March!

Michele: When you stand do you rest more of your weight on one foot than the other? For example, do you lean down on the kitchen counter an have one bent knee while the other leg is straight and holds most of the weight? Sometimes people stand with a hip cocked to one side and that puts uneven pressure on feet and legs. The only other idea I have is that you may have better circulation in one leg than the other.Good luck figuring it out. :flowerforyou:

We got an unexpected call from DS inviting us to meet he and DDIL in Portland for a meal. What a surprise! DS was here for a class and DDIL also took a class. We enjoyed a pleasant meal and heard about their new plans. The Army has given him a new assignment and they will be moving to the east coast later this spring. They seem pleased with this assignment and are looking forward to it. I think this will be good for them.

We have been very spoiled having them in Western Washington for the past few years and have enjoyed the opportunity to see them fairly regularly. In the future, seeing them will take more planning and a cross-country flight. :ohwell:

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Thomas A. Edison

    March Resolutions :
    1. Log every bite and swallow.
    2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
    3. Have fun every day.
    4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
    5. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.

Thanks Barbie....got here on time this month....nothing like wallowing in the last month wondering why no one is answering me...hahaha.

    March Goals

-Keep logging every day, thru rough days and days of struggle. Perseverance is the focus.

-Be more appreciative of my availability to exercise. Relish in its restorative properties, and its power to transform me.

-Look at myself in mirrors, and acknowledge my slimmer self.

-Try new recipes with whole grains and use new veggies weekly. Cook cleaner doesn't mean eating always the same things. Eat outside your comfort zone.

-Keep journaling. It has the power to heal me. I am more aware of my strengths and also things I need to be mindful of.

-Take a more active, informative role in my own health. Do what I need to do to remember the insides are just as important as what I look on the outside.

    -Keep appreciating my blessings.
-Sleep is my friend, but don't overdo it. Getting up early promotes a fuller day.

Well those are my goals and I am sticking to them! Hard copy is on my refrigerator. I also still have my TOPS pledge on my chalkboard in the kitchen:

    I am an intelligent person.
I will control my emotions and not let my emotions control me.
Every time I am tempted to use food to satisfy my frustrated desires,
build up my injured ego, or dull my senses, I will remember.
I will take off pounds sensibly.

So my kitchen is quite the motivational mecca! I go in there and say my pledge, and then start my days.
Everyone have a glorious rest of the week and a great start to March!

Happy leap year day. Well at least for another 15 minutes!!!! I saw a picture of a lady who was 100 celebrating her 25th birthday today. In one of our hospitals they had 13 women delivering today, one was a set of twins. So Evansville is doing their part of providing leap year babies.

Fixed a pot roast of pork loin, small potatoes, carrots, celery and onion tonight. I am not a good gravy maker at all so I threw away all the drippings. Now I need to do something with the pork. i know I could make some bbq but that is a lot of carbs. Ideas of what to do with just plain pork loin. At 65 I am just beginning at this cooking thing. I just wish Charlie would agree to cut out his chocolates and tomato juice to see how his ulcerative colitis does. He used to really drink a lot of coke and he rarely does that anymore at all. Even when we were going out he would order an orange juice. So he has chocolate, apple or tomato juice. I can't imagine any of that being good for his colitis. Like the pot roast tonight. I was just going to throw the onion away. I love onions, but diced up in my food. I can't just eat an onion. But that's what he did. UGGGG.

My sister's doctor's appointment is tomorrow for the surgeon to look at this malignant melanoma to see what course of action to take. For newbies here, she is a breast cancer survivor from a very aggresive type of tumor. Now 8 years later notices something on her lower belly and it is malignant melanoma. Her husband if he is anything like he was with her breast cancer ordeal will be with her for every appointment, treatment, surgery. In fact he really doesn't like it if we are there at the hospital when she has surgery. Well you know what I say to that. I'm sure others would say it in a different way but I just say hogwash!

Allison, wish I could be there and hug you but know we are all thinking of you. We give lots of advice but you know it's your own decision. Somehow I think I know what you will say.

Sylvia, I really worry about your son. This flu right after his last hospitalization about a month ago. His poor lungs just don't have the healing power that normal peoples do. Really worry about him and the kids. Of course I also worry about you. Your body can only give so much.

Welcome to all our new ladies. Come join the fun. If it isn't fun during some trying times laugh anyway. Laughter gives off endorphins which makes you feel better.

    Thanks Barbie!

And thanks for the quotes from your motivational Mecca, inspirational Becca!
Anne wrote: Can't sleep tonight. My alarm is going to go off in 4 hours.
I'm the same. When I have an alarm clock set I can hardly sleep at all. I sleep lightly, constantly waking up and looking at the time and thinking how many more hours I'm allowed to sleep. Funny how that works. Or not funny, but strange and certainly not very practical!

Heather don't worry, in June there will be NO spelunking in ice caves under glaciers. That's a winter pastime. In the summer those caves are dangerous because they often fill with meltwater without warning. Even my glaciologist friends don't venture into them in summer.

    February resolutions with comments:
    1. Eat 500 g of veggies per day (Check, almost 100%)
    2. Declutter 15 min per day (Hrm... Managed well for a while but failed when the stress levels got out of hand)
    3. Exercise formally three times per week (jogging or weight lifting) (Same as for point 2)
    4. Walk everywhere, whenever possible (Almost 100%, but unfortunately I didn't get out much)
    5. Plan meals for the week (Failed miserably)
    6. Keep up my new-found strategy of working 25 minutes, resting 5 minutes. (Worked well in the mornings, not in the afternoons.)

Special comment on the lack of formal exercise. I consciously refrained from exercising when I was severely stressed because I could feel that my muscles and ligaments weren't recovering as they usually do. It was frustrating not to be exercising - especially since I'd established a pact with some friends that we'd meet at the gym at 7 am every Tuesday and Thursday. Still, I'm proud of myself for actually listening to my body and not pushing it when it was telling me it didn't want to be pushed.

March will be slightly hectic though nothing like February. I'm heading home in a few days but will be coming back to Stockholm to see my daughter's fiancé defend his PhD thesis - which he will do on April Fool's Day, of all possible days to choose. I'll need to get back to frequent running to get in shape for the Spitsbergen half-marathon in June. I'm pretty convinced the work-25-rest-5 strategy is good for me. So...

    March resolutions:
    1. Eat 500 g of veggies per day
    2. Declutter 15 min per day
    3. Jog three times per week and lift weights twice a week
    4. Plan meals for the week - at least when I'm at home
    5. Work 25 minutes, rest 5 minutes.

Just turned 50 (Feb 28) and pretty new to MFP (20 days). Hoping this group will motivate me on my journey. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis so moving is painfully and something I have tried to avoid in the past, but the weight must go, so not moving is not an option. My goal (as simple as it may sound) is to walk 25 more steps each day. Wish me luck!

Happy March! Thanks for the great message Barb! And everyone, great inspirational stuff, love it! Goals - lose 3 pounds a week, get my butt to the gym (PF Planet Fitness) 4 days a week, cut the sugar(fruit will be my downfall) boost the fiber, get at least 6 hours of sleep each day, find time to get my flower beds going, be happy in the moment, be grateful, and be kind. A beach trip this weekend, (first days off since January 24), seeing Ameruca at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City on the Oregon coast.
Mason jar update - Yesterday/oatmeal, walnuts, dried cranberries and fresh blueberries, added hot soymilk. It was great hot, very filling, only ate half, drove to work, not so great cold, nuked it on my break - yuck! Today dug half of the 9 grain out, under was mango, blueberries, and almonds, poured half a cup of hot almond milk on, let it sit 15 minutes while getting ready for work, delicious, still too much, flushed the rest.

Michele, If the swelling doesn't go down on its own with rest and elevation, I suggest getting to your doctor. You may have an injury you are not feeling OR it could be something with your circulatory system or lymphatic system. If it gets worse, get to the doctor too.

About seven last night I discovered that my kitty that had extensive dental work last Wednesday has a large oozing wound (3" diameter on a 7 pound cat) on her abdomen. To me it looks like a burn and I am wondering if they had her on a heating pad while recovering from surgery. It clearly hurts her. I cleaned it up and put antibiotic cream on it, then could not sleep at all worrying about her and feeling guilty for not noticing it sooner. She appeared to be recovering well, eating and walking around and sleeping a normal amount until last night. Last night she had not come when I opened the can of soft food, so I picked her up to put her in the kennel to eat it, and that is when I discovered this weeping mess! So I am exhausted and worried and waiting for the vet to open up.

I am 48 can I join? There are not too many upper 40's to 50's women that have a hang out place. Can I join or should I tuck my tail in and quietly move along?

    Morning sweet friends~
Thank you for all the love and support it truly means the world to me...
I slept from 7 -5:30 wowza must have needed it.. and then you know what I did? got dressed and went to the gym. yup I finally did it !! just got up threw some clothes on and got back on the horse.. saw a few of my gym buddies and they were happy to see me as I was them.. If I can make this a habit like I did before and start eating right .. I will be well on my way to better health again...I did about 1/2 hr of treadmill and elliptical, I want to ease my way back in and not try and overdue all at once..
I will explain to my DSIL that I was planning on going to the Cape that weekend and that she could choose another time..
Well I will give in, the lady my SIL is covering for will be back from maternity leave, and SIL is planning on taking the summer off from work FMLA ,so I am stuck between a rock and a hard place
