'Gentle' Step Support March 2017

I have been on two different step challenges that have both been 10,000 steps challenges. Everyone starts out all gung-ho...got a gazillion steps in today or this week...and then, they are gone! I don't know if members just lost interest or the 10,000 steps were just too much for someone just starting something like this.

What I would like to start is something more realistic for people who work in offices or are just starting out as far as walking is concerned.

There would be no limit...top or bottom...just recording steps taken in a day. The goal would be your own and, I think, would be a little easier to maintain if the only person in competition with you would be YOU. This would just be a place to record what a person is doing and maybe help with motivation to keep moving forward.

How this would work is for each person to record how many steps taken in a day...or a week...or how ever you would want to do this. Record it even if you only took 100 steps or 30,000 or anywhere in between. With this gentle challenge, there would be no failure, no judgement. As I said, the goal is your own. Winter is here. This might be a way to keep yourself motivated to keep moving even during those days that aren't the greatest weather-wise.

For those of you who are new to this walking thing, please don't let the amount of steps I and some others take in a day be daunting. I really meant what I said about this not being a competition!

Some of us will take a whole bunch of steps in a day, some of us will take fewer steps a day but just remember, every step each one of us takes is a Victory!

The above was written by Wysewoman53 when she started this challenge many months ago. She is not with us right now but there are many of us who find this thread so helpful we are keeping it going until she comes back.

At the top right side of the page there is a hollow star, click on it, it will turn gold, and bookmark the page. I hope you will join us in walking our way towards health.

Haven't synced FitBit yet spent yesterday in pain for 5 hours then 5 hours in hospital. They sent me home with painkillers and advice to see my GP so don't think I'll get many steps in.

Well done mystic on your walk

This is lovely. When I first started walking, my goal was one day a week for 20 straight minutes. I'm up to 4 days a week for 3.5miles each walk! Last week I had 56,168 steps! I would like to ask a question. How do you get step goals to fanciful places? I've almost completed the fitbit walk challenges and would like to branch out.

@ddveedub - Way to go increasing your steps. I found an atlas online when I googled maps for Middle Earth. Spikeyhair is tracking the miles to her favorite vacation spot. Choose where you want to go, figure out the miles, and keep track. It is a fun way to keep track of miles and I find it gives me a little more motivation.

I think the trend you mentioned is common with the bigger threads or groups. Once it starts gaining momentum, everyone wants to join in. But a few days/a week later it's long forgotten. I like the idea of a smaller daily check in approach so I hope you don't mind me catching up

I just started a new job which has DRASTICALLY reduced my step count! The farthest I go is 50 steps to the kitchen and it's hard to justify doing that 30 times a day. I'll be going to back to the gym next month but can't afford it for march. The weather is still pretty bad here so I don't get outside as much as I should. I'm going to try to at least walk on my lunch and take the long route to the washroom at work.
    So far in March:
    wed mar 1: 4,741 steps/1.92 miles
    thurs mar 2: 3,688 steps/1.49 miles
    fri mar 3: 3,581 steps/1.45 miles
    sat mar 4: 12,324 steps/4.99 miles
    sun mar 5: 3,243 steps/1.31 miles
    mon mar 6: 6,125 steps/2.48 miles
I think I'll make my goal 5,000 steps per day

It's great that you have joined us and 5,000 a day is great, I only get my number up high when I go to the gym. I am retired and gym is subsidised. If you have any energy left after working or even before, you could try some YouTube videos Leslie Sansone or Jessica Smith
Good luck remember every little helps, sometimes I get up and dance
BTW I'm 72 and have lost 42 lbs in a year but the exercise is to keep me fit and strong I will NOT be a little old lady with a walking aid

I have decided I'm going to walk to Uluru! Only 8,229 miles from my city in Western Washington. My grandpa was stationed in New Guinea in the 40's and while he was convalescing, he explored a good portion of Australia. He never got to go back and I haven't really traveled at all, so I'm marching virtually;o) Only 8,220.18 miles left to go as of yesterday.
