I take Allì, it is NOT a shortcut!

I recently commented on a page about losing weight. The question posed was:
How are you effectively losing weight?
Of course answers varied from good old diet and exercise to gastric procedures to a few having conditions that caused mass weight loss. I said I take Allì and have changed my diet and exercise habits. Almost immediately I was met with a rather hostile comment.
The comment went something like this:
"Oh, you mean you are taking the easy way out because you are still too lazy to want to do the work! You are the type of person that gets a lap done because you want a quick fix."
I normally ignore comments like this. It made me fume this time because this person was not only trying to insult me but others on this page because we did what is best for us...Our struggles are all different but we share a common goal when we try to lose/gain weight. We are trying to better ourselves. We cannot continue to shame eachother!
Anywho. I take Allì. It is in no way a quick fix (especially for a gal in the 300+ club). I still have to eat right, work my adipose off doing cardio and strength training, and accept that I will probably have a few set backs along the way. I have accepted that I need extra help. This is in no way a "quick fix"! Lap and bari procedures are in no way a quick fix. No matter how fast or slow we lose or try to gain weight, our health should be the goal.
You can do anything.
You can love yourself at any weight.
It's never too late to love yourself.

Ick! Alli isn't what anybody needs, sorry. I don't see Alli being used for some "healthy" goal. It just makes users fear fat. Dietary fat doesn't make us fat......too many calories do. Alli doesn't promote lifestyle change.
There are people here who have lost LOTS of weight naturally.17 -
I have tried many different pills to lose weight and never had the right mindset along with them so I neber have success on them (Alli included). I think you have a good foundation in that you are working out and watching your diet, which in the long run will help you it is sad that people feel they need to belittle other's decisions, honestly its pathetic, IMO. Good luck to you!8

It doesn't sound like the easy way out, but it does sound like a way to eat fatty meals and not worry about absorbing it (or other vitamins as well, which is not good). It says "If you eat a meal containing little fat, don't take a dose of Alli", so the key seems to be cut down the fat in your food and it's the same idea without losing the vitamins absorption. They said people taking Alli only lost about 5 pounds A YEAR more than those just doing diet and exercise, so for the vitamin loss for 5 pounds a year it surely wouldn't be my choice, but everyone on here is doing their best and it's not up to us to attack others for their choices. Just don't be surprised if people don't agree with you.

It's true, no medical intervention is a shortcut. Appetite supressants, oily diarrhea pills and surgery are all meant to kick off permanent lifestyle changes, and can work as long as the real issues are being dealt with simultaneously. Calling any of it a shortcut is ignorant... Unfortunately, however, too many people who use these methods see them as the solution rather than an aid, and wind up failing. Ask anyone who's had surgery and then gained all the weight back because they thought it would permanently restrict their calorie intake. I'm not saying these things aren't helpful and that nobody should use them. People just need to understand what they'll do and what they won't.
In summation, I agree, and it's great that it's helping you. I personally wouldn't risk it.5 -
Do what works for you. The journey is yours - along with the success or failure that results. People love to judge, because obviously what *they* do is the right way (insert eye roll here). You seem to have a solid mindset - if Alli helps you, then don't worry about others opinions.5

I knew a co-worker who ate one semi-fatty meal and had horrible repercussions (let's just say a change of underwear was needed).
Alli makes you fearful of ingesting fat. You don't take Alli because it absorbs fat; you take Alli because it makes you avoid eating fat in the first place.
OP - Dietary fat is necessary for many bodily functions. It's not the enemy.10 -
If you do the math, Alli can "help" weight loss to the amount of approximately 1 pound per month. How much fat are you consuming per day? As I understand it, Alli blocks about 25% of that from being absorbed. I believe you have to keep fat under ~15 grams per meal, and ~15 grams for snacks, to avoid the side effects. If these #s are accurate that means at most you can consume 60 grams per day, of which 25% or 15 is blocked.
15 fat grams amounts to 135 calories per day saved. Which works out to about 4000 calories a month. Or a little less if you're erring on the side of caution and taking in a little less than 60 grams a day of fat.
If this works for you, then go for it. Having to track your food and limit your intake so as to avoid nasty side effects CAN be motivational. Personally, I did try it once upon a time and kept my fat intake low enough that I had no side effects. But when it came time to buy another month's worth, I just could not see where ~1 pound per month was worth the $.5 -

You said Adipose...I love a good Doctor comment.5 -
Good for you OP, you found a way to create a calorie deficit that works for you. There is no way I would take that stuff, I would/did take the slower less messy way. But like others have said, you do you.1

You said Adipose...I love a good Doctor comment.
Heehee psst - Adipose is the proper medical term for body fat Though I too love a good Doctor comment.
I see Alli as the gastric version of someone following you around and smacking you over the head if you eat fat. You reduce your calorie intake, because you reduce your fat intake, because you're too scared to eat it in case you poop your pants.2 -
I feel the need to hunt down the 'Alli Horror Stories' thread that's in these forums somewhere. Don't remember the exact title, but I could probably track it down with some search attempts. It's an, umm, interesting read. Heh0

You can do this Liz! But be forewarned.

That's the one! Thanks!
ETA: LOL. And I was the last one to comment on it in December.1 -
I find Alli as just another sales gimmick. Think about it: you take it to reduce absorbing fat. But did you realize that it doesn't discriminate what KIND of fat it absorbs? So omega 3 and essential fats are also absorbed. But wait, to get those in, you need to SUPPLEMENT them back in at the COST OF CALORIES AGAIN (fat is 9 calories a gram REGARDLESS if good or bad fat).
People are following advice from some doctor's because most doctor's solve patients issues with..............well pills. The solution is to identify the actual issue and not just solve a small symptom of the actual problem at hand. If one is overweight or obese, it's because they eat too much. Not because they are just eating fat.
So, have you reduced your actual portions? Are you eating off smaller plates? Do you only make enough for one serving for yourself? Do you count your calories accurately?

I think it's great that you've found what's working for you op. And it's very true that we each have to attack our weight loss endeavors in a way that a right for us.
As far as people criticizing you taking alli....I'm not going to jump on the wagon, BUT do you think your success has to do with eating right and exercising more so than the alli? Could you continue exactly what you're doing now, except stop taking it and continue losing weight just the same? It sounds to me like you could!0 -

My neighbour recently took it, which was a very short lived experience before she through it in the trash.... And she's a nurse, has zero excuse for falling for this stuff!
I'll just leave this here, instead of going into detail :explode:
