I love barre classes but every time I go an instructor comes over to check on me
Apparently I work out exactly like I sing karaoke.... in my head, i am perfect but other people are watching like wth is she doing?
My current fitness goal: keep going and get through one barre class without looking like i am dying
Does this happen to anyone else? I would love to hear your awkward fitness encounters!

does pressing the wrong button on the treadmill and throwing myself off the back count?
I was meant to be pressing the "slow down" i instead pressed the "speed up" panicked and pressed it more .. eventually I flew off the back!
Then there was a zumba class where i kept bumping into all the other dancers because I have two left feet!
I work out at home now27 -
I was horrible at yoga when I first started. Still not much better. I'm limber and flexible but have zero balance. I see all the other people of all ages, shapes, and sizes holding the one-leg poses just fine and I'm teetering all over the place.
I felt like yelling, "but I lift and can walk 7 miles in 80 min. and can do 60 min. straight on the step-mill! I can do some things!" But, no one other than me cares so I just keep working on my balance and try not to fall on anyone.14 -
My first exercise class we picked a kickboxing gym because my aunt and I wanted to try it, well we tried it on "bootcamp" day. I had to run and power puke half way through, but I puked and rallied and everyone cheered me at the end, I'm sure I was super embarrassed but I knew I found my people when nobody made me feel dumb but rather that I was awesome to keep going. So yeah, was my favorite gym. I went for several years and then sadly they switched to strictly boxing and I think t hey lost a lot of people and then they closed.4

Don't know if you want to hear from someone still fat and not even good in their heads...but I once took a "beginning yoga" class. It wasn't my usual beginning yoga class; different instructor at different time of day. After about 10 minutes of trying to get into this weird pose, the instructor came up and I said, "I'm sorry...I just can't do this." His response was, "Oh well...it's really advanced yoga." I said..."Then maybe you shouldn't call the class, 'Beginning Yoga!'" and out the door I went!
Then there was the time recently when I fell off the stairmaster (the kind like a short escalator to nowhere) and just kind of hung there with the stairs beating me until my husband got it turned off...but he's the only one who saw that.20 -
Are they asking if you're okay because your face is red or because your alignment is off.
I'd have a conversation w/ the instructor asking what "are you okay" is supposed to mean.
Generically asking that isn't that helpful.7 -
Concur with JoRocka. You should look like you are dying if you are really working hard. You might look like you are in pain, or you might look confused - not because you are but because your facial expression when you are trying not to die just comes out that way. We all look odd when we are doing something super hard. Keep it up, your goal to keep going is admirable!3

I did aqua fit during menopause- it kept me cooler.
One day I had a hot flush half way through the class. My face was so red the whole class came to a stop while the instructor leapt in the water to 'rescue' me.
A quick explanation to the whole class and we carried on as normal.
I did make sure the rec centre knew how fast the instructor had responded when he thought I was in trouble.
Me, the little old lady of the Zumba class.
(It was a great friendly class of much younger women)
I had been Christmas shopping all day, no food or drink, then rushed to Zumba.
Half way through the class I went all cold, white, and sweaty. The woman behind me saw it happening in the mirror and was calling out and catching me before I even realized I was about to pass out.
I missed the passing out by a hair and was lowered to the floor, plied with water and damp towels until I recovered.
It was the Christmas dinner and drinks night after the class so we all had a good chatter about it then.
Both experiences were a tad embarracing but what I remember most is the support and care the class and instructors showed towards me.
Basic uncoordination, no sense of direction or timing, and singing like a cat with its tail stuck in the door- I can't let them bother me or I would barely leave the house.
Cheers, h.

I get bright red very easily with only mild exertion so instructors ask me if I am okay pretty regularly. I am kind of used to it by now (this was true even as a high school athletic kid). The most embarrassing this I have done was when I was younger, I was doing conditioning for field hockey as the first day back before the school year started with my new coach, and I got overwhelmed by the late summer heat and kind of passed out while throwing up on the coach's shoes. Yeah, good times4

So this might be the best board ever! You are all my peeps!
I was a competitive swimmer and did a lot of backstroke. At practice one day they took down the flags and, being the incredibly unobservant person that I am, didn't notice and crashed into the side of the pool since the flags were what I used to count strokes before my flip turn. Had a huge lump on my head (luckily no concussion) and my arm was bruised for several days.
In PE I got hit in the head with the bat once because the girl at bat was so excited she actually hit the ball that she threw it instead of dropping it. We were behind a fence but I was quite unfortunately taller than the fence.10 -
I take a boot camp style class at the Y 2 times a week. I look like I'm having hot flashes 5 minutes in and could pass out at any minute. The instructor checks on my at least 3 times during each class to make sure I'm OK. Everyone in the class is very supportive of what I'm trying to accomplish but sometimes I find myself questioning what the heck someone like me is doing in that class. Then I remind myself that my goal is to one day stop looking like that person who can't handle the class.
It is getting easier. Little by little :-)16 -
I did triathlon training with the highschool team and Colonel of the JROTC. Colonel was the coach, I was the "female adult chaperone" who got to participate. All practices went really well and I enjoyed getting to do the bike and swim, very out of the ordinary for me. I'm quite comfortable in the water and a fairly strong swimmer. Unfortunately, I panicked during open water swim in the lake, swam as fast as I could, passed up everyone, and quickly collapsed into a trembling heap soon after the swim. I wasn't allowed to do open water swim the next year6

In a kickboxing class, tired, hungover, not paying attention. We were doing uppercuts to warm up and I managed to punch myself in the face. I looked over and the instructor was trying really hard not to laugh.
The worst part is that a week later I did it AGAIN.30 -
My quads burn so bad when I do leg extensions that I have to stop & it looks like I'm going into spasm the way I arch back to relieve the pain. Another trainer walking past even laughed cause it looked so dang awkward & painful.2

I was on the treadmill one day and stepped off for a sec to adjust the fan the gym provides. I left it running and when I went to get back on I stepped on the moving belt. Needless to say I ended up on the floor. So I casually looked around and everyone had a good laugh, including me. I just shrugged it off and kept going but in my head I was completely embarrassed.9

My response would be "Why?"
It could be something as simple as I look confused or I am doing something wrong or in pain.
If someone is checking in....especially someone in charge... it is likely not criticism or judgement. It more likely is to make sure you are OK.2 -

OMG, thanks for the laugh. I have done stuff like this just tinkering on things in the garage. I felt stupid & I was the only one to see it.1 -
I've seen the "I think I'm gonna puke" face many times. That's usually the only time I'll ask.
Usually it's with someone who thinks their in great shape and tries to overdo more than they can. Especially with my new male clients.

That would describe a combination of me and my husband the first two for me and the last for him.
My balance is not as it should be. I have trouble going downstairs without a handrail if the stairs are steep or the steps aren't that wide. It all started when I hurt my knee and started worrying that it would act up in the middle of going down a set of stairs.
There's a long set of rock and concrete stairs going up the side of a hill at a park near me, with no railing. Two sets of the stairs are 20-30 steps each (interrupted by a winding trail going through) and then the next stretch is 230 steps with no break!! Even though I'm doing weightlifting and the elliptical and some hill running, I went up the first set of stairs but then had to crawl halfway through the second half of the second. Forget the last bunch. And I see people going up the darned thing like nothing. One woman saw me struggling, asked me if I was all right, and noted that I was not ready. I think I was strong enough to go up but was scared of tipping over sideways. If that had been a hill I would have had no problem going up.

This brings back memories of me in Cross-fit! I threw up in my first class, I hadn't eaten properly and it was very intense. He checks on me every time I turn up now xD7
