Insanity Vs. Cycling Vs Jogging Vs. Weights Vs. (non-intermittent) Fasting Vs. Low Carb

Okay, currently I'm just under 6ft, male, 206 Lbs.

Years ago I just did Atkins lost a load of weight (maybee 30 Lb), gained energy, but then plateaued, went back to a normal diet, and over the years have pilled the fat back on.

I'm now using MFP, fitbit One, Tanita Scales, and a Polar H7, whereas when I was Atkins I just used scales, and don't have my old weigh-in's available right now.

I've tried a bunch of things, so thought it might be worth sharing:

INSANITY & Fasting
So Just over a year ago I tried doing the Insanity work-out: Effect: Lost 7Lb fat gained 4 Lb muscle in 1 month

Jogging
Lost 5 Lbs fat in a month

Fasting & Jogging & Dumbbells
Lost 5Lb fat Gained 5Lb Muscle in 1 month

Low Carb & Cycling
Lost 5Lb and maintained Muscle

The Sustainable Plan
Its amazing how less carbs, but more veggies and good fats make food choices much more manageable.

Clearly in between these regimes things have fluctuated. It appears the best approach is a sustainable one, so I'm now planning on continuing with Low carb diet, easing into a balanced one with more focus on non-processed food, heavier on Fruit and Veg than previously, and a mix of cycling and dumbell work 5 times a week easing to 3 times a week.

Target is to come down to 180Lb (150 Lean & 30 Fat), in about 5 months.

When in deficit, it's improbable for most of the general public to gain any "real"muscle since it takes mass to build mass. One can look leaner and have the illusion of a more defined muscular look, but that's not the same as adding actual muscle. Also increase of strength isn't a great indicator that one actually gained muscle.
But the approach of maintaining muscle and losing fat is what most people want to do and that approach usually is: eating in a moderate calorie deficit and lifting weights that are challenging to retain what muscle one already has.
