recommended gym in Detroit (Birmingham) area

Anyone from around here have thoughts? Criteria are: 1. relatively cheap 2. Training available if wanted, but not constant pressure to purchase a "plan" 3. Neither dungeon like not glitzy spa. The Birmingham YMCA would work, but it's a bit too small and crowded to be ideal.
