Hi all how are you?

I currently work 3 nights a week (8pm-8am) as a care assistant. I get up with the children at 7am the day before and only get 2 hrs sleep after my shift as I have to get my youngest from nursery. Because of this I tend to stick to normal daytime meals.

The thing is I get hungry during the night and because I'm tired I crave junk like chocolate. So was wondering if there's anything I can take with me that's ok to sit in my bag and will keep me going for the night?

Since starting this job everything is suffering I'm not getting as much exercise I'm gaining weight and I'm shattered all the time so any help would be great.

I hope you get an answer for this. I used to do security, and on night shift my lunch time was about 4am, which is never good.
I now have an office job but Im still stuck as to what to take to work so I dont have to get stuck in the queue at the counter in the staff canteen.

Ive dropped a post onto another group to ask people for advice and a link to this post for you. Best of luck

I eat two meals a day so I skip breakfast and lunch and eat a big meal when I come home from work and a snack before I go to bed because it does not matter what time we eat.

Regarding carbs: If I eat something that is mostly carbs, my entire is day is thrown off because I want more carbs. Try going a week low-ish carb and see how you feel.

There is no need for you to match your meals with the children's meals.
Or, when you do eat with them, eat low calorie meals that are nutrient dense like broccoli, swiss chard, and other greens because they have Micronutrients/ Phytochemicals and fiber.
Bring food to eat at work that makes you comfortable: protein and more veggies (cooked or raw).
Some people take soups in a thermos to work.

Most importantly, get more sleep. Start teaching the children to do more around your home. It is a hassle in the beginning but will pay off for you in the long term. Lower your standards about having an organized and dust-free home.

What do you eat at home? Can you prepare extra food for home meals that you can take to work?

I've just finished 4 weeks of 10-6 nights, at break (somewhere in the 1.30 to 3am area) every night I ate about 400-500 cals in nuts, cheese, dark chocolate and an apple.

Do you have access to any of the following? Microwave, fridge or kettle? How many calories do you have for eating at work?

From what you've said so far, I would advise planning some chocolate in to your calories. I use 2-finger Kit Kats and Blue Ribands for this as they are only 100 calories each.

Thanks for all your replies. The last few days I've started taking fruit with me to work which seems to be helping with the sugar cravings. Not completely but it is helping. I'm also going to try eating low carb as I've noticed my tiredness gets worse when I eat carbs.

I try to get my children to watch a film or something so I can get some sleep but my youngest being 4 he has the attention span of a gnat so it doesn't always work.

My diet during the day up until the last couple of days has been pretty awful so I'm going to start again and see how I do. I've been prescribed vitamin D tablets to help with my deficiency so hopefully that will help too! May also have to buy some dark chocolate as I love that stuff
