how can I figure out how many calories I need to start losing weight ?

Click on settings > Update diet/fitness profile. It'll ask you a few questions and suggest a calorie goal for you based on your responses.

I did this, but I do not think it gives me the correct information, I feel that I am starting with too many calories.

How many calories did it give you? anything between 1200-1600 is good..that doesn't include the calories burned by exercise which you should be eating back.

You don't need to starve to lose weight. It is okay to eat a healthy amount of calories while losing.

I eat 1600 calories a day, plus I eat back a portion of my exercise calories. And I have lost 53 lbs so far. So, go with the number it says.
