Hi Ladies,

In your eating, are paying attention to things like iron, folate, potassium, calcium, copper, magnesium etc? I am trying to mentally get my head around getting the RDI for these things from whole foods before TTC so as to need less supplementation.

Would love to hear your opinions.

I've just been trying to maximize the number of different fruits and veggies and eating plenty of wholegrains. I've been eating some full fat dairy and fish too. When it comes to supplements, folate and vitamin D are essential (you should start them before ttc) but none of the others are.

For me personally, I feel like it gets stressful trying to hit the numbers on a day to day basis and I don't really care to plan my food around it as I want to enjoy/want what I'm eating (of course I put emphasis on fruits, veggies, etc) but I have to be honest with myself, I'm going to have something that isn't nutritionally sound at least once a day so I've just started taking a vitamin as a little insurance. Currently I'm taking Vitafusion Hair Skin & Nails but I found a good deal at Sam's for their version of the Women's Multi so I'll take that after this bottle is finished. It has the added bonus of calcium and has pretty much everything else that the Hair Skin & Nails has (including Folic Acid & Vitamins A,C, E, D & B6 & B12) just at lower doses. (which is probably a much better dose anyway because I really don't think there is a need to have 1667% of biotin.)

I was low in vitamin D during my first pregnancy so had to supplement, and my daughter had to also for the first 6 months (which was kind of annoying, on extra step in your newborn routine!), so I have started a prenatal vitamin but had totally forgotten about vitamin D, so thanks a heap for the reminder @sarahspractice!!! I think by trying to lose some weight I'm inadvertently getting the food groups and nutrients in, but always good to focus more on it.

Not really, I've just been taking a prenatal vitamin for all that.
I also take calcium and vitamin D (though I have forgotten for the past while...)
I'm mostly trying to make sure I get my protein and veggies and and to eat a variety of foods so that the baby isn't allergic to anything and might have a good palate when it's born (some studies show that they can taste what you eat).

I think this baby is going to be a shrimp lover. Because I can't seem to get enough of it.

I've been trying to eat a balanced diet in general, but I've also started a prenatal vitamin per my gynecologist's recommendation. I feel like I probably get plenty of Vitamin D here in sunny Colorado but I guess I'm not sure about that. I plan to drink a lot of milk when I'm pregnant to get plenty of calcium. I've heard babies take that from you and moms sometimes end up with weak bones. I haven't done enough research yet though!

Yes, it's true, they will take the calcium from you. Hence why I've been making sure to get the 1000 mg a day. But vitamin D also helps you absorb calcium so that's why it's good to take together. Do you spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter in Colorado? Most people where I'm from are vitamin D deficient during the winter since it's so terrible to be outside, and even if you are you're all bundled up lol.

I feel like I spend a lot of time outside since we have a lot of warm spells here, but I don't know how it correlates to how much Vitamin D I get. A supplement probably wouldn't hurt.
