Lanette ... I don't know about "Ultra" pasteurized milk, but I absolutely will not use "Ultra" pasteurized cream. I'll use just pasteurized for cream but the "Ultra" uses stabilizers like carrageenan ... which is why you get such extended expiration dates. The texture and taste is completely off for me in ultra pasteurized cream, not to mention, I don't believe carrageenan is good for you.1

Lanette - I just boil the full fat milk, then cool it to just above blood heat. I then transfer it to a Pyrex bowl and stir in the starter, either my old yoghurt or commercial . Then I put it in my small oven which I keep warm for a few hours by turning it to 50° for a minute or two every so often. I have to set the timer for this as I forget otherwise and leave it on! After that I just leave in the cooling oven overnight and in the morning I have yoghurt!
I am going to try the 'start from cold' method when my Instant pot arrives as some people seem to be successful with that. It's worth a try as it's so much less work!
I've just ordered a fine mesh colander and some industrial sized coffee filter papers as that seems to be a good, clean and easy way of draining yoghurt. I don't normally drain mine, just pour of the whey when it collects in the areas I have scooped out, but I might start.

Oh, wow! This is a busy group. I can see that I will have a hard time keeping up. I was busy yesterday and now I think there is five+ pages to catch p on. Thanks for the welcome.
I struggle with how to introduce myself to a team. It gets old saying the same old things. Especially when I’m trying to change many things in my life. I’m trying to determine what makes me happy, to move from a couple mentality to carving out a life of pleasure, health, and purpose for my remaining years.
I’m female, 71 years old, widowed three years ago, and Mom to a very spoiled rescue Redbone Coonhound. I can’t tell you why I chose a Redbone Coonhound. I have never had any kind of hound before and never had a hunter in the family, but I saw a picture of one and thought they were lovely. I wasn’t thinking of how large they were nor that they were strong and “hunters” and would want to go after all the furry critters. I live in the South, on top of the Cumberland Plateau in a small, gated community and on a lake.
I belong to two book clubs, a Bible study, a garden club, am on the social committee for our gated community. All of those things keep me from some real projects like de-cluttering my home, garage, and storage unit, getting papers in order, and losing the 10 to 15 fluffy pounds hanging on.

Allie: I am sorry for the loss of a beloved auntie. I hope for the best for you with the divorce. Tom does not deserve you, and you deserve a much happier life filled with love and respect. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: The two days of HOT are upon us. I'll be closing curtains shortly. It is 6am and the current temperature is okay but I don't expect it to stay this way. :noway: Living beside the river should help a bit, but hot is hot. :ohwell:
Tere: I don't remember whether I wished you a happy anniversary, so I'll do so now. Happy Anniversary! :flowerforyou:
Dana in AR: I agree with you. It was very poor judgment on the mom's part to teach her son to tow a big trailer through a crowded parking lot, and it will be a horrible memory for the son. :grumble:
I envy all of you yogurt eaters. Lactose intolerance issues keep me away from it, but I have tried soy yogurt. Commercial soy yogurt is tasty enough, but I stopped buying it because it seemed like too many calories and not enough nutrition. I have cottage cheese instead. DH has yogurt nearly every morning for breakfast. He likes Greek yogurt.
We have a hot-hot-hot weather forecast for the day. It is predicted to reach 98F by this afternoon. I've closed the curtains on our east facing windows. I'll open them back up after the sun goes to the other side of the house. All of our large picture windows face east, and the window on the west side is a small one.
The pest control company has a man coming here this afternoon to fix the mess that their crew created when they did the initial cleanup under our house last winter. He probably won't get here before the heat of the day, but it should be relatively cool under the house.

Hey, I heard something on a "live move weigh less" podcast that I found really helpful, about avoiding temptation. The general idea was that focusing on the long-term goal is too far off to override the moment's gratification. "Yes, I need to lose 40 pounds, but I want this fettuccini Alfredo NOW. I'll be good tomorrow." Instead, focus on how you want to feel an hour from now. Stuffed and bloated? Or light and energetic?
This helps me when perusing a menu.

Morning everyone.
I had a super day yesterday. I went to a small town about an hour south of where I live to visit an old friend who recently moved there.
We had a great day wondering around the Main Street checking out all the boutiques. This place is a nice change as it doesn't have the franchises - McD'S etc. So it was a nice change.
Unfortunately I came home and I don't know why (perhaps someone has some insight) but I started snacking and never really stopped.
Now this morning, instead of having a glow from a day well spent with a wonderful friend, I feel bloated and upset with myself for once again sabotaging my eating.
Today though is a fresh start, as they say. I am meeting my cousin and we will have a walk along our sea walk and that may help to clear my head.
I'll let you know how it goes!
Enjoy your day all.

Katla - Some people use a lactose free milk, like Fairlife and the Fage yoghurt starter. I saw it on Facebook. I think the yoghurt bacteria slightly changes the lactose as well.

Rainy day in TX today so no water aerobics. I walked inside my house for 27 minutes. Spent that time thinking of all of you. It warms my heart how much kindness and wisdom is shared on this thread. Thank each of you for being so supportive. A lot of things I haven't experienced so can't offer any advice but I do care when my friends are suffering
Patsy-I also have macular degeneration. Diagnosised 15 years ago as wet and so far still ok. I participated in the AEREDS I I study for 6 years to determine the best formula for the pills. Glad your eyes are better. When I saw the retina specialist he told me my eyes were very dry and to use threa-tears 4-6 times a day. I visit is much better since then.
Earnie- sounds like you are a busy girl with a busy social life. It's good to be among friends who love you.
Glad you joined us on this journey.
Better do something productive or read my book for book club, Ordinary Graces.

Earnie, I am 71 years old and live my husband, two dogs, and a cat. Before I started on my journey to health and fitness, I spent most of my days knitting and watching TV or doing computer tasks. The more I made health and fitness my top priority, the easier it was to let go of the sedentary activities. It happened gradually and now I knit only while riding my recumbent exercise bike or when at the baseball game with my husband.

Hey Ladies!!
So Prudence is driving again, I am not happy about it, and she senses that! Its strange how my inner clock has adapted to getting up at 6:30 to 6:45 am so I can walk Annabelle. I used to normally get up at 8-9:30 am, so I have changed my sleep patterns. I go to bed at 9-9:30 every night, because I need to.
Husband, son and I have been walking, and I try to jog a bit as well. I feel like a lumbering whale though! Its frustrating to not be able to jog well anymore, not that I ever did jog mind you. But if I wanted to race a son from a to b, I could. Well, I am proud of myself walking.
Hug!

It is hard to keep up with all of you and learn who's who but gradually will "get it" hopefully. Love reading all your advice and activities and always check your posts every day. Thanks!
Just finished watering all the garden and ready to have breakfast and get the day going.
And in the bear world, we have a bear rehab facility in our area that takes in orphan black bear cubs until they can be released back into the wild and do okay. Four escaped recently. 3 sat on the roof of their enclosure and were easily coaxed back in, but one made a run for it. As we are very close to the U.S. border, officials think it may have crossed over into the U.S. Fortunately it is not dangerous, but it seems you may now have one more illegal immigrant!
To all in the tornado areas, yikes! Stay safe. Have never had one of those in our area and that would freak me out.

Hi friends-
I felt like I would never catch up so I skipped a few pages this am. Hope I didn't miss something earth shaking or super enlightening. I am truly enjoying hearing about everyone's journey whether it is exotic or mundane. The pictures are great!
Happy belated birthday, Becca!
Happy anniversary to Pip and (?) 56 years! Oops forgot who.
I am thinking of all of you and sending cheers to celebrate accomplishments and hugs to comfort the hurting.
I have been floundering a bit on what to do about my marriage. I am discovering just how so severely co-dependent I am. Is it too late to change that at age 67? Somehow I am having trouble putting myself first. I mean really, really first. If we split up will I feel guilty and empty because I am no longer enabling him? My counselor hit the nail on the head when she said I am being "the mother" in this relationship. Yes, so true! But I have always been the "mother". Even when I was little. That is how I coped with alcoholic parents.
Thanks for listening. Love you all.

Becca - If she really is driving without insurance then you MUST report her to the police. Also tell them that she is not fit go be on the road. They can check the insurance on their data base and impound the car. Think how you would feel if she ran over a child! Hard I know, but do it NOW.
Much love Heather UK xxxxxxx1 -

Toni in CT: I love what you took away from the "live move weigh less" podcast. Focusing on how you want to feel an hour from now is a great idea!
Heather: We have lactose free milk on hand. DH uses it for cooking things such as clam chowder & various sauces. He does it for me, so I can eat the chowder, too.
Becca: I had to give up on jogging after I gave myself bursitis in my left knee. I prefer yoga and the recumbent bike at the gym. We also have recumbent bikes at home that we bought to ride on the roads. DH still uses his, but he needs my help occasionally so I usually walk beside him rather than ride mine. Mine is set up on a trainer and I ride it in the garage while I read books. It gets quite a bit of use in the winter.
It is supposed to be in the 90's today. I'm waiting for the sun to cross to the back side of my house before I wash down the windows that face the river. I'm going to use Windex Outdoor. I hope it works.
