My cross-training approach (going easy on the kneesies) has been yielding slow but steady improvement in my 5K speed. I only run 2-3 times a week and mix that with 2x swimming and 2x cycling (on good weeks, where nothing interferes).
I'm looking forward to some great events this summer, including a couple of spring tri's. I think it's working!
Yay! Welcome to the group!
@PastorVincent New job sounds not so bad!
@shanaber Whoo! Congratulations to your daughter! Love hearing she's enjoying running!0 -
Yikes... This thread is moving too fast to read! Think I'd have to give up my running time to read all of them!
Been a funny month, had the "black cloud" settle for about a week meaning just getting day to day stuff was hard! Now at these times getting a run in really does help but getting myself dressed and out the door is a big hurdle! Don't think I'll get my target this month but I'm happy with the little progress I'm making!
4/1 - 4km - 4/50
4/2 - rest day - 4/50
4/3 - 5.4km - 9.4/50 - awful run... legs are still feeling the effects of spinning and running on the weekend....
4/7 - 4km (dreadmill!) - 13.4/50
4/8 - 6km back out in the open air! - 19.4/50
4/21 - 4km (dreadmill after spinning!) - 23.4/50
4/24 - 4km first time I've got my head off the pillow to go out for a morning run - brilliant run! - 27.4/50

My daughter is starting to train to run the SF HM in July with me. She has been doing FlyWheel indoor cycling 6 days/wk for almost a year now and lost 50lbs. She is following the beginner Hal Higdon HM plan and this last weekend (week 3) called for a 5k. She couldn't find a 5k she wanted to run but there was the Oiselle Tenacious 10k so she signed up for that instead. I was worried she wasn't ready for it but she nailed it running it in 1:12, at an 11:44 min/mile pace. All of her previous races have been at 13-14 min pace and she was sure she would never be able to run any faster! She also told me for the first time, she is really enjoying running!! I am so excited for her. Pretty sure by the HM in July I will be encouraging her to go on ahead of me and worrying about slowing her down rather than the other way around! She was going to run a 5k for her next race but since they had a 10k she signed up for that instead
@shanaber That's so cool! Wow, losing 50 lbs and getting into running too? You both rock.4/22 - Drake Road Races Half Marathon. 13.37 miles in 1:55:37. Full report later?
@karllundy Oh, yes, you'd better give us a run report! Great run!3 -
I biked today. After a 40 minute ride, I got home feeling completely out of shape. I'm looking forward to doing more cycling (in a few weeks) to get that bike fitness back.
It felt like a really good workout, though my watch says I only burned 200 calories and stayed in the easiest HR zone (I checked my pulse myself though and it was technically right - my heart wasn't beating fast, although I was out of breath and could hear my heart pounding). I know the zones aren't right, as it registers even my easy runs all in the highest zone, when I'm not even breathing hard. But I just don't know enough about it. I pretty much go by perceived effort and breathing, and the HR data is just interesting.3 -
Heard about a 5k/10k near me for this weekend, so I signed up for the 10k. I’m hoping the weather cooperates and I can finally break an hour!9

Another track Tuesday on the books! I look forward to these for days, and last night I was so pumped I wanted to go to bed at 8 pm just to get to the workout sooner
Today was 1.5 miles to warm up, 4 x 1200 meters with 400 meter recoveries, then another 1.5 miles to cool down. I never did this workout in my last build-up (I did mile repeats two weeks in a row to sync up with another crew doing the same plan but a week ahead), but this went far better than I thought it would. I estimated I'd do 5:30-5:35 for the 1200s based on my 400 and 800 repeats, but I surprised myself! I did a 5:32, 5:31, 5:27 and my "last one, fast one" was 5:15! And they all felt GREAT. I am finally taking a rest day tomorrow, then I don't run til the evening Thursday, so here's to 1.5 rest days

@shanaber your daughter is killin' it, that's fantastic!
@lporter229 that sounds like a great time! Valerie June is an amazing talent. I pulled up the website to check the lineup. I think the highlight for me would be Shovels & Rope. I love those two.
I was tempted by a 6 mile trail run last night while my son had soccer practice, but I was smart and stuck with the planned rest day, after my 20 mile on Sunday.
Going for 10 tonight, probably on pavement as I want to work on pace and do some strides and fartleks.4 -

Just updating my miles since last Thursday. Technically, I am now in taper for the Flying Pig, so it will be a push to make it to goal this month, but primary focus is to stay healthy and rested, so it will be what it is. I have to say (knock on wood), I do not remember feeling this rested going into taper before. Not sure if that is a good sign or a sign that I haven't trained hard enough. I guess we will see on May 6th. I have not really set a goal for this race other than to enjoy running the Flying Pig on my own terms for the first time. Hopefully that will be accomplished regardless of the time outcome.8 -

I put in an easy three during soccer practice last night. I knew a storm was coming, so it had to be short so I could beat the lightning before they cancelled practice. I made it just in time. I'll probably do a few road miles this afternoon.
I still don't know what summer race I'll do. I have a September and a November (22k and 30k) all but dialed in. I was going to do the "Slacker Half" in June, which I still might do, but was hoping for something on trail. Nothing matches up with my schedule very well because of other commitments. It will come...

@noblsheep Not sure what my stairs plan of attack is. I'm going to see if there's any stairs workouts out there, or if I'll just DIY my way up and down.0

86.6/110 miles completed
I had a great 6.1 mile run this morning. I had 5 on the schedule, but I felt so good and I had time so I added an extra mile. I'm not sure if I'll run tomorrow because there is an 80% chance of rain plus a cold front so I very likely will not get up early and run before work. If it is good at lunch or after work, I might try to run then. But I may just move that run to Friday.
I have a question for y'all. I need new shoes and the nearest running store is an hour away. I was thinking about ordering some online. Are there any good sites to order shoes at a good price? I mostly order stuff on Amazon and the price there for the Saucony Ride 10 seems to be the same as the running store price.
Great races this weekend @kevaasen ,@sarahthes, @huntleigh3229 and @katharmonic !
The new job sounds pretty good @PastorVincent. A pretty park with historic trails sounds like just the type of running I would love.

@kgirlhart
There's no single place for great deals, you just have to hunt. I've found good deals on the previous years models online at Nordstrom Rack (seriously!) but you have to really dig through the selection to find real running shoes. I've also had good luck with Sierra Trading Post, REI (they often have clearance prices in the REI garage), Running Warehouse, Running Room, as well as the shoe manufacturers websites.
The shoe manufacturer's will often have a guarantee where you can try the shoes out for a month or more and return them, for free, if you don't like them. Brooks has a 90 day trial period!!
Otherwise you can try this site for finding the lowest price
https://shoekicker.com/
or this
https://runrepeat.com/
There are definitely deals to be had out there if you hunt them down. In my spreadsheet of shoe miles I also track what I paid. For 23 pair of running shoes, my average price is $65/pair3 -
Oh wow, this thread is huge! I started running last August, mostly just around my block (and half of that time with my poorly trained dogs) although I got up to running about a mile to a mile and a half without stopping. I decided to hang up my shoes when it got icy and focused on calisthenics and strength training over the winter. But all of the sudden it's finally spring in Minnesota and my running bug is definitely back.
Yesterday was what I hope will be my first regular run of the year - I went out twice in February on thaw days, and once or twice a week in March until a string of early spring blizzards hit. >.< I also quit smoking in mid-March which frustratingly f-ed up my lung capacity and energy for a little while.
I was starting to worry I'd get fewer miles in April than February but this week is looking great and I'm on pace to hit my first mini-achievement of the running year: 10 miles in one week! Yup, I'm starting slow, but looking to build. My major achievement of the year is set for October - my first 5k during the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend. I'm all registered and everything, so now I just have to actually run 5k consecutively a few times in between now and then. No biggie!
Actually, I feel pretty good about that, even if my legs are still a little grouchy at me after yesterday. I went 2.2 miles at 11'30", which was a good pace for me, faster than where I was last year and in March. I'm focused on building distance more than speed, but knowing that I can manage a bit faster a bit longer without stopping is encouraging.
So here's to the last week of April, and a great season to come!
