About black? How did this expression get started? Sure I could use google, but this may provide more candid answers.

Simple. Once that phrase went black, it could never go back.

It dates back to slavery days, when new inventions were purported to be able to replace problematic, uppity slaves with machinery.

I would appreciate the removal of racial overtones unless it is critical to the origin of the expression, as even in my ignorance I in no way thought race was involved

I don't think race ever played a role. I'm pretty sure it's fashion related. Black has always been considered a timeless go-to base color for outfits. Later, colors like navy blue, grey, and brown were touted as "the new black". And wikipedia agrees with me, so I must be right.

    I love problematic slaves.

In case you were interested in the real answer, it's because it's generally safe to wear black with any other color and in any social situation. The Little Black Dress is the most versatile of women's clothing. Black is traditionally the most versatile and safe color for an item.

Therefore, saying something is "the new black" means that the something is viewed to be as versatile and safe a choice as black traditionally is.
