We had our relay team meeting Friday night and it looks like I will be runner two. My first leg is 7.50 miles all downhill “steep at times.” My quads are going to feel that! I think that I read a discussion on here before about running down hill and that it’s best to take short quick steps rather than long strides. Any other tips?

@Orphia – Great progress! Will be 27:?? next week? Coincidentally, I also got chased by a big barking dog yesterday. He trotted along behind me but thankfully dropped off at the end of his yard.

@ContraryMaryMary oh thats so frustrating! Sat nav just isn't set up properly for NZ roads. I find Google maps is usually the best but even then. I'd be so disappointed!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! It's still a struggle to let go of scales after 20 years of looking at them! I'm just reading the 60 odd posts im behind lol

July 28 - 11 km Trail Run in North West River Valley-rim trails with Dianne. 90F so a real scorcher for us.
Double loop of the CN - Y junction descent. Legs were pretty trashed by the time I hit the base of Tim's Hill to climb out of the valley. 265m Elevation =870 ft.
July 29 - 6.82 km with 8 members of our little club. The so called Friendship Trail wasn't very friendly. Overgrown with grass - waist high in quite a few places and a tangled mess creating lots of hidden trips lines where the grass has built ropes. 106m Elevation = 348 ft. Legs were a bit off after yesterdays adventures.
High humidity today so a real struggle. Still have a 15k planned for tonight with some friends - another Hill Climb as we live in a River Valley so anything over 6km is either repetitive loops or a hill climb to get to new - higher trails.

What a month eh! Anyone set up the next month yet? I want to keep going with all you guys! I really appreciate all the advice and support. Especially @PastorVincent, thanks for the advice about my calf, it's much better so I think it's just stretching, or lack of lol.

I did a flying 5k this morning, another PB, which bought my distance to 122km and last day tomorrow - going to do 8k to round it off to 130 lol. Given I aimed for 90, I'm stoked!

Next month will be interesting, I have a conference at the end of the month ten start the HM training plan. I was tempted to start a week earlier but no point. Confidence is in dunedin, so a really hilly city, and I won't have a car. I'm gearing up for 2 runs on the hotel dreadmill (love that term).

So excited!

Today's notes – Got up this morning, and my quads ached. Specifically, the vastus lateralis on both sides, and a lesser ache in the rectus femoris on both sides. I took the bilateral nature of this to be good news, more likely just I worked pretty hard on the ski slopes yesterday than a serious injury.

My calves ached a bit too, but my ankles weren't as beat up as they normally are in the morning. I guess hiking *is* good for recovery from Achilles tendinitis.

Thought about it, and made myself wait till after 5 PM to go running today. The idea was to have more recovery time. As things worked out, that also meant my new Darn Tough Socks arrived in the mail. On a Sunday, and not even from Amazon. Put a pair on to run, and felt naked with the quarter length sock instead of the micro crew. But I got used to singlets, I expect I'll get used to these in the summer, too. At least if my ankles don't burn too badly:

By then my calves had quieted down, and the quads were down to mild muttering from the vastus lateralis. Also, the sun was lower, there was more shade, and it was overcast. Even got a few sprinkles, but they didn't last. So I went out to run, thinking maybe 10K.

That thought didn't last. By 200m, I was thinking about quitting. Somewhere in the second mile, the quads stopped aching; now I was simply running on tired legs. That's a familiar feeling; I've seen a lot of Sunday runs on the marathon training plan where a moderately long run on Sunday after a max long run on Saturday trains me to run on tired legs. But this was so tired that I skipped the detour through a pleasant residential neighborhood that would make it 10K, and just took the short 4.6 mile run around the long block. I left myself the option to go longer late in the run; but by that point it occurred to me that I'd rather be healthy than fast, and 4.6 miles was likely enough for today.

I managed an average pace of 7:47 per mile and an average heart rate of 129. I felt a lot more wiped out than those numbers would indicate; but at least the quads weren't complaining any more. Yeah, I ran my two small hills. Looked at the first one, and my brain couldn't process it as a hill after yesterday. No length to it! The second one at least looked like a hill, but it was runnable. OK, I've run that hill dozens of times; but my confidence in my ability to run hills was a little low today.

Walked around to cool down, stretched, came in. 20 minutes later, I felt perfectly normal for after a run. It's just today's run was a bit tough mentally. Scheduled rest day tomorrow, and I expect running will be fun again on Tuesday.

I did 22.1 miles today.

The bad: Nutrition this past week has been awful, and sleep has been bad too. I blame traveling for work. BG was a challenge, but was high rather than low. I've made some changes and have yet to get insulin doses dialed in. I forgot to apply sunblock, but there was a lot of shade and it wasn't terrible.

The good: I didn't have the cramping I have had the past 2 weekends, thanks to lots and lots of electrolyte tablets. The carbs from those could partially explain the high BG during the entirety of the run.

We never see them but we hear them all the time when we run the boardwalk after dark. They get up under the boardwalk and when you go over them, they leap up into the air and slam into the underside of the boardwalk, scaring the pants off unsuspecting runners! That trick of defensively leaping up is why the natural state of armadillos appears to be "dead on side of highway" - they leap up when cars drive over them, and hit the undercarriage. But of course you know this already!

I have now run in three states, so that’s fun. Maybe I should get a map or something and start keeping formal track. Maybe it doesn’t matter. Either way, it was a really nice run down the middle of Sioux Falls, where my husband’s family and a lot of friends live - dedicated bike and running path, slightly overcast and around 60 degrees, a little under five miles and I felt like I could have got another five. The path was excellently maintained and the other runners and bikers were very friendly (especially the older men on bikes, ug). I'm used to ignoring most everyone around me when I run so it was a bit of an adjustment to work in nods and waves and whatnot, but it was fine. I'm pretty sure the couple of smiles I attempted to return looked like grimaces though - running and smiling just doesn't work for me.

After my run we went to a friend’s house and I took a quick shower and change and then we all went to brunch. Then we spent a few hours visiting my in-laws, then I took a nap, then dinner out at a surprisingly great restaurant (SF is a decade or so behind Minneapolis food-wise, and maybe a quarter of a century behind the part of CA I grew up in, but it’s getting better), then a very late night with friends and wine and a fire. Today was mostly napping and driving, and tomorrow might need to be an extra rest day, but I’m already past my July goal so we’re golden. That said, my package from Old Navy arrived while I was gone, so I do have some new shorts to break in. I now have three pairs of five-inch inseam and two pairs of capri length for shorter and cooler runs. Sweet!

Still working on getting caught up, but thank you for all the well thoughts following the Packer 5k last Saturday. On Monday, I travelled to Chicago for work. While I was there I did a lot of walking including a nice long one down by the lakeshore. I would have run, but was with a coworker so we walked. I could feel it later, so at least I wasn’t completely still the whole week. When I got back, it took me a little while to get back into the mix of things. I finally got out of my weeklong running slump and went for run while our daughter was at a free play soccer thing this evening. It looked like a storm was coming in, but it held off so did a nice out and back to the trail.
