September 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

Made my September goal, just, as illness thwarted my running in the first week of the month. Planned a short shakeout following my half on Sunday - about 5km - and spent the whole time thinking, if I do just under 9 I'll hit my monthly mileage, so I did, as you do!

I am woefully behind on the thread again - 10 pages! Doubt if I'll be able to catch up. I'll try to do better in October! Can't believe it's October already! Anyway, I did want to report that I MADE MY GOAL for September. It's only the second time since I joined the group a little over a year ago. So, I'm pretty stoked. I ran and walked for a total of 50.7 miles - goal was 50! See you in the Oct thread!10

@katharmonic - we have seen a couple of new places that have axe throwing and with your mace training you could be the big winner! 😁 Honestly I bet it is a great whole body workout!
@shanaber it really is. Last week I was so sore all over, and I'm sure I will be this week as well. Lots of legs with squats and lunges along with the shoulders and arms.
Oh, and I was invited to be on an axe throwing league but I can't do it right now because it meets the same night as my half marathon training. But I might do it over the winter
@ereck44 hope you started reading with a big pot of coffee. You can get through the entire thread by tomorrow
And @quilteryoyo great job on making your goal!
Catch you all in October!2 -
Way behind inthread myself, but I see that @girlinahat fought through some "kitten" and took home the medal! Great job!
Ran 13.1 today to finish off the month at 185 miles according to Strava. Fell off the tracking bandwagon hard so I will just have to assume it is right.5 -

Finished the month with 123 miles which was 3 miles short of my running plan. Not at all disappointed. It was a hot month and most of my runs except the few I did on the treadmill were completed with a heat index of 90 or higher. Two were actually done at 100 degrees. So given the extreme temps, I'm pleased with my efforts. I also dropped 6.2lbs in September because I finally got my head wrapped around the fact I need to log my food because my hunger level is not a good indicator of how much I need to eat.
Took my kitty to the vet today, she received a shot of anti-inflammatory for her leg injury and seems to be doing 50% better already. The DR doesn't think it's a serious injury but I will have to bring her back on Friday if she doesn't improve by then. Congratulations to everyone on a great month!! See you on the next thread!!

@mbaker566 Congratulations on the PR and AG finish!
@girlinahat wow what a lovely place to run! Well done! I shuddered at the thought of running on shingle, running on gravel wears me out and shingle sounds ten times worse. Also, have you looked into silicon toe caps? That’s the only thing that keeps my husband from getting the same blister in the same place.
I made my 60 mile stretch goal after all. Needed 7 miles today to hit it, so that’s what we did. The heat is still heinous, I don’t know if the heat index hit 100 while we were running but the temperature was 96. This is ridiculous weather for the last day of September. When we finished and cooled off I had visible salt crystals all over my collarbones and face. Fortunately it’s supposed to be cooler next week.
There is a pair of sharp-shinned hawks that live in one particular tree along the Greenline, at about the two mile mark. We have seen them several times, and today the male soared down and flew in front of us about ten feet away as if he was pacing us. We got a really nice look at him! He was sitting in a tree next to the trail on our way back and didn’t even blink as we passed. We also saw half a dozen deer grazing, and a bunch of swifts swooping after mosquitoes.
That’s it for September, here’s to more pleasant weather in October!4 -
One final 9 mile run for the month tonight but I still fell a bit short of my goal. I had to wait out a thunderstorm before going out tonight. I wanted to run *in* the thunderstorm but with the store of an ultrarunner killed by lightning over the weekend at a trail race in Kansas fresh in my mind, I waited. When I did get out, the lightning was off in the distance but still provided quite a show
https://photos.app.goo.gl/vsVYbD5GkEU1jhKL7
One benefit of waiting is that the temps dropped 15 degrees from upper 80's to lower 70's, but it was still too warm for me.

final thoughts -
yes @teresa502 and @7lenny7 - shingle is like pea gravel. I guess it relates specifically to small pebbles on a beach (we also use the term shingle to mean timber roofing sections, go figure). Shingle on a beach can vary in size from large rounded pebbles (which are even more ankle breaking) to this. This is the back end of Chesil beach, which is a geological phenomenon - naturally graded pebbles. I like to call it a special kind of hell....
@rheddmobile I've not heard of silicone toe-caps but going to look into them. I have a problem where my pinkie and third toe tend to twist from side to side so I get a long blister forming. It's worth some research into!!! I just hope the current issues heal before the weekend as I have a walking holiday coming up!!!2 -
@girlinahat - I got the silicone toe guards at @rheddmobile's recommendation and I love them. I found mine on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MFN98LC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=11

missed runs earlier in the month from work stress and building renovations - decided to just go for it and do as much as I could. Prob not great for the body, but good for the soul!
So if my geography is right we now have athletic 3 New Zealand ladies in the group. @ContraryMaryMary , @Avidkeo and @kirstymn. So when will there be a HM Meet-up and pictures? Hawkes Bay ??
A special thanks to @Elise4270 for setting up October Challenge.
I second @shanaber Quote 'you can't out run your fork'.
@7lenny7 Thanks for the good words. I have added in some sets ( raises and drops ) at curbs and stairs plus some evening heat packs and those seem to be really helping.
My gimpy heel/achilles is coming around - Pain scale 1 this morning versus the 4-6 of the last week. Not as tight - uncomfortable when I get up. A few more days of low activity then a 1 km test run.7 -

Hi All,
I dropped off the list for the last two weeks, and I probably will not be back for a bit. Life happening right now. Two of my daughters ended up in the ER in two consecutive weeks, and we are deep in medical hell right now.
Thank you for the inspiration and support, and when things settle down, I hope to join you wonderful people again.16 -
I made my September monthly goal ..I ran 40.21 miles ..I will try 40 again for October..I started new job and Atlanta is in a major heat wave so it’s hard to run when I get home from the hospital .. Happy Runnung everyone12
