I headed out for a run around 10am and there were significantly more people out and about walking and running than usual (especially at that time of the day - lots of dads running, obviously home from work). Everyone was pretty good at the 2m distance thing, however, I did opt to stick to the streets where there is a lot more room, rather than my usual path along the water's edge which is way prettier but fairly narrow in places. Bonus is, there were very few vehicles on the road so I had no qualms about running on the road where I needed to. Any close encounters were eliminated after about 20 minutes when it started to tip with rain. Then I had the entire suburb to myself. Lovely.
My coach has us all making the most of building our aerobic base - we're going to be soooo fit by the end of the 28 days (if it ends then). Today's session was an hour - 15 minutes warm up at aerobic pace, then 30 minutes at tempo (half marathon pace), then another 15 minutes at aerobic pace to cool down. I arrived home just over a minute early and was happy to cover nearly 11km in that time. I think the cool rain really helped - it was glorious.
Yes so many people our walking! Amazing really. I am still going out at my usual time mostly, though tomorrow I'll be out a little later, after the sun is up for a change! Can't wait for my run tomorrow! Then a long run on Saturday.
And a 3 day weekend! Oh wait...
And the number of people who set up home gyms in their backyards - I can see two from my bedroom and passed several more on my run. Let’s see who’s still working out next week 😂
I'm terribly jealous of those who have gardens or are allowed outside to walk/run/bike.
We saw on the TV yesterday a video (from India I think?) where the police were making people they caught outside do squats or pushups as punishment. I was like "Jeez, the ones most desperate to get out are the ones that want some exercise, they'd probably try to get caught if that was their fine!"
Reporting back as promised... I did my speedwork on the 'rather-be-deadmill'. It was HARD, I'm probably going to have really sore legs tomorrow, but I did it and even managed the pace the plan demanded. Hal said I had made him very happy! (At time like this, it's the little things 😂)
@Avidkeo I feel for you with everything to come, it's scary! One of the worst things about the situation here is the number of healthworkers who are catching it, and nobody really knows why. Well they do... they don't have enough protective gear.9 -
@quilteryoyo beautiful! This was my most recent
My most recent quilt, did it for my 3yr old who loves rainbows and purple.
Impressive work!

@Avidkeo and @quilteryoyo It's a bonus to come here for running motivation and get a quilt show added on. Beautiful.8

quilteryoyo wrote: »@Avidkeo I am a quilter, but I didn't know they were called jellyrolls either. Well, I should say I used to quilt. I haven't in a while. I have a quilt top that needs to be quilted. It was supposed to be a gift for my nephew 10 years ago. Hopefully he'll enjoy it if I ever get it done. It's a log cabin quilt because he was attending Lincoln Memorial University at the time and their sports team nicknames are the Logsplitters.
Beautiful quilts, both of you! And you probably have seen a jelly roll, just didn't know it was called that. If you google it, put "jelly roll fabric" in as your search and you'll see what we're talking about.
I'm a quilter, too, and learned to quilt by hand by a group of ladies who met at a church in Pennsylvania where I lived. One of my "specialties" is finishing antique quilts that people leave behind. Sometimes it's for the grandchildren, other times it was discovered in an estate sale or I trade work for boxes of old fabric and UFO's (unfinished objects) which are like treasures to me and something other people want to get rid of.
But I do my own projects, too. Just finished this one... and am now moving on to some UFO's.
Here's a UFO pot holder that I did last week. Before and after, not sure which order they'll upload but should be obvious which is which.
Back to running... went out for a turn around/through the woods. There's a spot in the woods where twice now I've had what I call a "blip in the matrix", where I see someone I've already seen on the same run, but in a different place and it doesn't make sense to me how they got there. To be fair, the first time was a few days ago and turned out to actually be a different guy. Today it was a man and a beagle (with one brown eye and one blue). When I looked at my map later, I realized that they were probably doing an out and back and turned around shortly after I passed them the first time, and then they took the shortcut straight through the woods while I was running a lot farther out along the road than I thought. It makes sense now, but at the moment I just couldn't figure out how they got there. My running brain can't do math or figure out routes properly, but I get all sorts of good creative ideas or work out problems as I'm running along. Interesting how that works.
March goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
It seems this thread may be changing in ways I'm not thrilled with... For the record, I'm here for the running and the random, fun, entertaining rabbit trails. Like hot dog condiment debates. Or what delicious thing you just baked. Or what your family is up to. Show us your socks, for goodness sakes. I don't really want to come here and have to see the same debates that I can already find over on Facebook. I really like you all and hope I can continue to hang out here, but if it starts raising my stress levels, then it's defeating its own purpose for me.13 -

WOW! The talent in this group is amazing!2 -
Thank you to everyone who gave me opinions on what they would do in my place. I decided last night to do my 10 mile run this morning and see how it goes. Unfortunately my left knee decided it didn't like that idea. It has been tight but usually loosens up after a mile. Today it didn't and felt like it was grinding so I gave up after 3 miles. I may try again this weekend we will see how it feels. If not I will rest it and start again in a few days.9

It is sunny and supposed to be in the mid 60sF - so who wants to take bets on me being stuck in a surprise meeting and unable to get out to run?5

Everyone’s quilts are beautiful! I do dollhouse miniature quilting in 1/12 scale, when I get home (sitting in parking lot of grocery) will have to take a couple photos. @polska_girl I have a UFO of the same windows pattern as yours! I started it to challenge myself because I normally machine piece, and well, there’s a reason for that, miniature hand piecing is hard!
Got out for 10k yesterday. We started earlier so there would be less traffic and ran across the city divide (no sidewalks) to Germantown, and up to a small piece of woods. It looks like I will be able to run trails there but it was very muddy and I didn’t have trail shoes.
Most of the way there we were able to run in the middle of the road so my legs feel better.
Everyone was out and about and all being very polite about staying away from each other, with one exception - a huge family with several children running spread out all over the road and one of the little girls trailing sadly behind and dry coughing up a lung. An elderly couple walked right through the middle of them. We didn’t let them within 10 yards of us and I still felt like it was too close since we were downwind. I don’t think people quite grasp the difference between self-isolation and quarantine - if you actually have symptoms don’t go outside, period!
Stuff I saw on our run: beautiful cherry trees in full bloom. Bright green moss. Heard an owl, and a PEACOCK! We went right past the property of Melanie Smith-Taylor, Olympic gold medalist equestrian, and it seems she has peacocks. I first learned to ride from Melanie’s mother and she had peacocks too, white ones. The peacocks used to nest in the hayloft and scare the youngest students.

@shanaber Thank you. I feel for you and your neighbor. I'm one of those folks who holds onto the old familiar things as long as possible. I love learning new things, so you would think that wouldn't be me, but it is. Especially when it comes to technology. I hope they don't shut down your trail. Looks like a great place to run!
Thanks @PastorVincent, @hamsterwheel6, @Tramboman, @rheddmobile and @kimlight2 .
@Avidkeo Thank you! Love your's too! I also love the little dinosaur laying in the floor.
@ContraryMaryMary Great job on your training run!
@eleanorhawkins Yay! Glad you got the treadmill workout done without incident. WTG!
@polskagirl01 Love your quilt and that you do UFO's. I knew they existed. You did a fantastic job finishing the pot holder. I would have probably looked at that and not known what to do with it. Glad you figured out the "blip in the matrix." Those types of events make my brain hurt.
@kimlight2 I hope your next run goes better.
@rheddmobile Would love to see your miniature quilts. Glad you found a great place to run.3 -

@Avidkeo - I may be in the UK but I am in total awe of all those in the medical profession - thank you.
I won’t comment on some of the debate on here as I managed to get very upset last night by a fellow parent in my younger daughter’s class ranting about how she pays for school “and the teachers decide not to show up”. As if it’s not an actual Government directive closing the schools, and in fact teachers are stepping in to work through holidays for key workers’ (health and logistics) children. There was a bit of a row so I agree let’s stay positive and supportive. Huge huge respect to all the medics though.
I’m managing my one run a day, staying local and following social distance guidelines. Well over my original March goal, hoping to hit around 64 miles now by the time the month ends.

Our state will be officially "stay at home" starting tomorrow evening until at least the 10th of April, although outdoor exercise is still allowed. Since I've been home except for runs and groceries since the 14th, not much will change for us.
My virtual 5k yesterday was really fun. My time was about 28 minutes for just over the 5k distance and that was with a stop for a light, so I was happy with that.

Gorgeous quilts y'all! My mom was a quilter - reminds me of her!
So a neighbor shared something that their high schooler had written on their white board last week. I loved it so much I copied it down and I am trying to do this everyday (and of course failing here and there). It might be useful as we enter some really difficult weeks ahead:
What Am I Grateful for Today?
Who Am I Checking in on or Connecting with Today?
What Expectations of Normal Am I Letting Go of Today?
How Am I Getting Outside Today?
How Am I Moving My Body Today?
What Beauty Am I Either Creating, Cultivating, or Inviting Today?
Here are my answers from yesterday.....FWIW
Grateful for Facetime - got to see my sick boy who looked pretty darn good!
Checked in on a good friend that is going through some tough times.
Trying to maintain my diet and exercise routine with the new "normal" of staying home.
I walked to the mailbox down the road -( saw no one) just to get some sun and vitamin D
I road the Peloton and did a core workout
I spent a few hours in my garden, cultivating (and possibly feeding the deer)9 -
Well done all you quilters! I am loving all the quilt photos. I never learned to quilt but was always intrigued by my grandmother’s handiwork. I crochet and am working on baby blankets for my daughter currently (she’s due at the beginning of June). Like many crafters, I have several projects working at once. So many UFOs. Our Tuesday night social group is not meeting until the recommended group guidelines change.
Today’s agenda includes homeschooling kids, crocheting, and finding time for 2-3 mile easy run. Oh, and since I have my grandson today, cookies will be baked. That must happen.3 -
Here are 2 of my quilts just to add to the show LOL. I wish I had more time to devote to it but maybe when I retire. The second one didn't photograph well. It is dark greens, brown and beige with cream.10 -
@kimlight2 Those are beautiful! The first reminds me of a quilt made by my great-great-grandmother that is still in the family.2
-
I have always loved quilts. Growing up my grandmother made quilts for each of us. I still have mine and my mom's and my grandma's although my grandma's quilt that my great-grandmother made for her is quite old and the fabric is deteriorating. I have also purchased a few from a specific Amish quilter in PA who does all of her own designs. She has a daughter the same age as mine and they designed a quilt together. I think the girls were around 8 or 9 at the time and the quilt has bears and hearts in purples and pinks. It was supposed to be twin size when it started but by the time it was finished it was huge. @polskagirl01 I love your flowers, the colors just pop off that white background and the quilting itself is fantastic. How long did it take you? Also it is amazing that you can take UFOs and finish them like that!
@eleanorhawkins - great job getting that speed workout done! When you finally do get back outside for a run I think you will be amazed at how you feel.
@janejellyroll - that is a great time for a virtual 5k! I have a difficult time pushing myself for a virtual race.
@bearly63 - love that list and it is a great idea to do each day!
Also love your plants! I am into succulents and there are a couple of stores up the coast I am itching to get to that specialize in just succulents. I love the variations in colors and types and how they can surprise you with the prettiest flowers
No run for me today. We got up super early to try to get to Costco before the lines but even getting there 45 mins before opening the line was already around the building and this is just for the senior hour! I do have plans for my strength workout (on my to do list) and I have all of my weights out where I can't ignore them.4 -
Loving all the quilts! We have some seriously talented individuals here!3
-
@kimlight I’d say keep training and run it virtual you are so far into your training cycle. Our half was postponed until October so Skip switched over to ultra trail training instead ha ha Kim just saw your knee update hope it’s nothing
I thought a jellyroll was food
@quilteryoyo stunning quilt yours too @Avidkeo all you talented people
@hanlonsk wake I missed a conversation about hot dogs. Now I’m sad @PastorVincent I had hot dogs for dinner last night, I LOVE hot dogs
@polskagirl01 100% I’ve not been around a while because things have been so busy but I agree. Another talented person!!! Am I the only one who can’t sew?
Is there a link to April in the thread yet I might have missed?5
