So, as I'm cooling down from my elliptical, I'll tell you about the conversation with my sister yesterday. Reasonably short, but might be offensive to some for various reasons, so I'll stick it in a spoiler. Please note, there are only two people in the world who share my full genetic makeup, a brother two years older and a sister two years younger. I was 9th of 10 children, but it was blended: three of my father's (probably - different story), four of my mother's, and then the three of us. My parents broke each other of the remarrying habit, but passed it down to their children.
That was a side trip, sorry. So--you might think this sister and I would be on the same page. Not to stretch a metaphor to the breaking point, but we're not only not on the same page, we've seldom been in the same book, and often not even in the same library.
So, when I called her yesterday, I fully expected a lecture on the end times, which she's warned me of in previous conversations in lurid detail. She's been trying to save me since she was 22 and I was 24. She has yet to succeed.
Please note--I'm not trying to offend any person who believes. While I have enormous respect for the faithful, I simply have baseline opinions which are not the same.
My sister also believes the earth is flat. I just have no words for that.
I maintain the relationship because I love her, not because I agree with her, and when I can get her away from the religious and political discussions, we have lovely conversations. As she gets older, it's harder and harder to get her away from them, unfortunately.
So, yesterday, I called her to see if she was OK. When I asked her if the virus was impacting her, she asked me in curious tones if I actually knew anyone with the disease, and when I said no, she told me she didn't either. And then started into her theory that this isn't actually real, it's a hoax, there is no virus, this is just a way to trap us all in our homes while "they" take over the economy.
I didn't stay on the phone long enough to find out who "they" were. Told her I had to go potty. So... I'm a coward--but I could not listen to yet another conspiracy theory. I simply can't watch our country under siege in this pandemic, while all of us watch the death toll rise, and listen to someone who says it's all a lie. I would have said something awful, and nearly did as it was. If it would do any good, I would have, I swear... but she cannot hear reason once she's deep in these theories.
So, I'll refrain from calling her 'til all this calms down, and hope that in her disbelief, she doesn't end up getting ill because she believes it's not real. She has massive risk factors, as she has terrible nerve damage from a fall from a ladder, and is taking medication that has distinct immune system impacts.
But this comes under the heading of "the things I cannot change." I'm sure she feels the same way about me.
Had to get that off my chest... Sorry if it was depressing.
Love y'all,
Lisa
I had a discussion with my niece about people's reaction to this and some friends of long time standing surprised me in their reaction. Although I did not get hoax from any of them. I liked what she said they are just not their yet and seeing how serious this illness is. Thinking they are just not there yet helps me not get so over reactive because I want everyone on the this is a bad really bad illness because then they would more likely buy into social distancing, washing hands more, and avoiding crowds. These actions is what helps to slow down other getting sick. Lisa she just isn't there yet from what you say. Her opinion could change tomorrow.3 -

I remember not hearing anything past that when I talked with the Dr! (I had complete hysterectomy and chemo in my 40s after Dx) Your crocheting is absolutely gorgeous!! What a terrific thing to do as you are healing! Prayers for you as you reach complete recovery!! Stay safe!! So glad your daughter has found such a nice home!
Luci - staying safe in WNC
In 2006 I had DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in my left breast which was taken care of with a lumpectomy and nothing else. For the longest time I honestly did not know it was "breast cancer" Stage 0. The scar had faded away and I went on with my life of annual mammograms. I now know I was not well informed. So now I am a cancer survivor (twice) and have a new perspective of who I am. Not sure that makes sense!?
I am healing well. The incisions look great. I have a ways to go because of numbness and tingling in my breast and arm. I am accepting of the fact that all will not be as it was. Cancer is such a physical, mental and emotional thing!

Hello Ladies!
Penny ... so good to hear from you and know that you and your husband are together now.
Lisa ... conspiracy theories just astound me ...
Kelly ... thankful for responsible families.
My next-door neighbors are a young couple with a 5 year old daughter. They are frustrated farmers trying to have chickens, ducks (and soon goats I think) on their one little acre. Yesterday, they quietly left us a dozen brown eggs. Their hens have started laying! Such a neat surprise. Since they are respectful of distance, I have placed a card in their mailbox at the end of their drive! I wish I had something to offer in return.
This past week I placed and paid for an instacart grocery order for an elderly couple in our church. They confess to not being able to figure out their computer. It has been an interesting week, as they do know how to use their cell phones and have been adding to the order I placed daily. Finally, today it was shopped and delivered. I threw in a surprise I knew they would enjoy ... just got a text that they did!
Also finalized our taxes today and not overly happy about that. Not quite certain how we're going to pay this tax bill as what we had planned to do has now tanked ... We'll figure it out, but it does add to the stress.
A friend shared a devotion about rocking chairs ... no one can remain stressed for long in a rocker. I think I need to spend more time in mine.
Have a good day,
Beth near Buffalo.

Hi all,
Just about to watch a Lewis repeat.
We had a crazy time this evening, trying, and failing to Skype my son. It was totally ridiculous, with messages flying back and forth . I am definitely doing something wrong, or he is. How can something be so difficult? We gave up and took a break while he cooked the kid's tea.
Then we started again with WhatsApp video. It was great to see the kids and all their crazy energy. We told each other lots of jokes. They have painted rainbows to put in their windows with happy messages.
The morning trip to Devil's D yke was at 7 am and they took breakfast up there. My son made a chocolate cake. Bea said she ate all of it.
By the time we finished we were exhausted!
Tomorrow I'm cooking some extremely old frozen pork ribs. Bacon and red cabbage. Onions and garlic.
Love to all of you and stay safe.

I got dressed and am feeling much better..7 -
Luci The nice thing about the Science of Well-Being course (and the Happiness Lab podcasts) is you can just go at your own pace. I am committing 30 minutes a day to it, inspired by my mother, who signed up for a Disciples Bible Study course years ago. She and 2 others in her study group ended up completing Disciples I, II, and III, no small accomplishment. She was able to do it by spending 30 focused minutes first thing every morning.

My employer is looking into telemedicine, but it's in its infancy. 2 friends who are doing telemedicine are encouraging me to look at Telehealth opportunities. I contacted the company they work for and heard back today. Sending in some documentation and will have some kind of phone interview or discussion soon. If offered a position, I think I'm ready to make this transition. It's not the way I thought it would be. I've been with the same urgent care provider for nearly 30 years.

Gratitude: I am still marketable at 65 years of age.
Savor: I savored my little doggy Molly as she sleepily hopped onto my recliner early this morning, made a quick commando crawl up onto my chest, and made a tiny sound asking me to scritch-scratch her and give tummy rubs. She was so sleepy she was still practically snoring. Sweet girl.
She's a tiny Yorkie.

Machka: I hope you are able to work from home without undue stress. It seems like a grand idea compared with going into a potentially virus ridden, life threatening office. :flowerforyou:
(((Lisa))) Sorry that your sister is difficult. I’ve rarely been pleased to be an only child, but at this moment I can see a bright side. :ohwell:
Heather: You are in a more flexible society that we seem to be. We’ve been ordered to shelter in place. We can buy groceries but are otherwise expected to stay home. Businesses are unable to open. How will they meet their rents? I worry for them.
Barbie: Thanks for "Nine things to give UP if You Want to be Happy." Brilliant!
Lanette: I love the 10th thing to give up if you want to be happy. “Don't waste time fretting about things/people/events I can't control.” Also brilliant!
I’m feeling a bit housebound today. :ohwell: I may take the dog for a walk later. I’ll stay away from people except at good social distances.

Luci ~ Love the pretty baby!
Beth ~ What a kind and generous thing you did in helping the elderly couple. I know you have a lot to tend to in your own home and that was such a blessing for them. Also, how kind of your neighbors bringing you eggs.
Karen ~ That possible job sounds like a wonderful opportunity.
Heather ~ So good of you and your husband to keep the grands entertained.
Heard today that the schools in Ga will be closed until the end of April and possibly for the rest of the year.
DH's BnL in the assisted living notified us that his glasses had broken. Now DH has to figure out a way to get them fixed.

For most of the women in this thread, we should get tee shirts....

Katla - We are in a lockdown too, but we are allowed out once a day for local exercise. No meetings with any others except for 2 people keeping strict social distance. Food shops are being very strict with distancing etc. DH is worried that he can't get the porridge oats he uses to make muesli - no cereal to be had on the shelves. Every other shop is shut. It's eerily quiet. Hardly any cars on the road.
They are making announcements that people should not visit the coast at the weekend. People can be fined if they congregate. Actually, the weather is supposed to be turning very chilly, so it won't be much of a problem. Tomorrow will be the last nice day for a bit.
Heard today from DH'S daughters that they both are ok sharing the elder's house. They both are working from home. It is a great relief to DH.
All good here. I'm very relieved that I managed to get back to my memoir today. Word told me I hadn't been there since March 13th.
