Supplements

Do you recommend taking collagen? Does it really work and just a fad? What about greens?

This is generally regarded as an evidence-based, neutral source:

If you're thinking of it as a protein supplement, there are better ones; and foods with all the essential amino acids would be better yet.

It can have benefits for other things; see the link above.

It's less standardized, but I prefer to get my collagen the old fashioned way - through making stock from meat bones and trimmings. It's actually very easy to do and very cheap/free (just the cost of water and salt to taste). Cooking the bones (and any veggie scraps you have lying around - I use the ends of onions and carrot peelings mostly) gets all the good stuff from the bones out. Some people drink the stock straight (I only do that when ill), but you can also use it in soups and stews or to replace water in recipes (like for rice.) Obviously works best if you are a meat eater.

I don't think supplements are bad (I take a couple for things I really want to make sure I'm getting enough of every single day), but my preference is to go straight to the source when I can. Plus for this, I'm literally turning garbage into something useful, and there's something very satisfying about that, for me at least! :)
