My quit smoking app is genius (I think anyway). Its tip ~ repeat 'smoking affirmations' to help you stay quit. Why didn't I think of that / hear about that before. I love affirmations!
    Tell yourself ~

    🚭"N.O.P.E". (Not one puff ever)

🚭"Smoking doesn't fix the problem, it only creates another problem".

🚭"My family, my health, my mental well-being".

🚭"I will take a deep breath and mindfully meditate".

🚭"I will call a quit buddy".

🚭"No cigarette is worth undoing all my progress & hard work".

Much like drinking alcohol, I've learnt the hard way that there is also no such thing as 'one cigarette'. Nicotine is HIGHLY addictive. Good luck to anyone who is quitting or planning to quit. I'm on day 11 it's so worth the discomfort of the first few days.....

@Bein2day I loved your smoking affirmations. The one about "no cigarette is worth all the progress I made" resonates with me. We went on vacation with another couple maybe 7 years ago, I can't quite remember. His wife and my husband thought it would be fun to smoke on vacation (like the 3 of us used to). Well I KNEW I would not be able to stop if I got back on that horse so I watched my husband and friend smoke. My husband has had a hard time since then, staying off some form of nicotine; the patch, the chew, bumming a cigarette if someone is smoking, the pouches etc. All because he didn't say no that one time. I need to get into that mindset with alcohol; that ONE will never stay just one.

I turned on the tv a half hour ago, just the morning news, and I've already seen or heard 10 references to alcohol. This is not a football game, it is news on a Saturday morning. The segment about "things to do this weekend" (wineries, people dining outdoors with drinks on the table etc) was chock full of them. I stopped counting. The point is we are bombarded constantly with images of this. At that point I turned it off and watched that Kate Bee blog I mentioned.

Yes, I noticed that too. On our local city website, things to do this weekend, nearly all include alcohol. That's brutal when you're trying to stay sober. It's easy to think, well everyone else seems to drink.

I have been listening to Father Martin on youtube. He says it is insanity that the alcoholic thinks after being sober for some time, that he or she can take a sip, which leads to several more episodes of drinking. He says addiction is like getting into a boxing ring with alcohol and thinking things will be different this time. I can't say it well enough; i highly recommend Father Martin chalk talks even if you're no in AA; his wisdom is amazing.

Last night, my fiance and I had to write a speech for our engagement party tonight. I was sober, so I could write it with clarity and expression. This morning I woke up remembering my speech instead of being in a fog wondering "what did I write'?

I am worried about my cousin who is coming to the party. But I have had to do some self talk saying "Ruby, you are only responsible for yourself." I am sure his wife will either not bring him if he's already been drinking or bring him and keep an eye on him.

I am not drinking tonight; I don't want to be silly or goofy. I want to enjoy this special evening. The hosts of the party are non-drinkers. I think they'll still serve alcohol but I am not going to be tempted. I bought a beautiful dress and lovely shoes. I want to be proud of myself.

You will have a lovely party, sober, and enjoy and remember every second of it. Have a plan in place ahead of time if your cousin is starting to get out of control. Wife and possibly another person escort him out right then and there. He cannot stain your beautiful occasion. Have a grand time! We look forward to hearing about it!

If there is to be toasting, which I am assuming there will be, you can inform the waiter/staff that you and anyone else not wanting alcohol, to fill your pretty flute with something else. This can be done without fanfare and even ahead of time if you don't want to draw attention. I did this at my wedding for those that preferred not to imbibe.
