So, what happens if your blood sugar spikes…physically? Do you feel different? I’ve noticed that since I’ve stopped eating so much sugar and simple carbs that I’m not as fatigued. The kids wear me out but that’s different. I used to feel lethargic and weary even when I woke up in the morning. I still don’t have an excess of energy but I’m encouraged that it’s getting a bit better. I think once I have some time to actually start exercising and hiking again that my energy levels will improve.

Congratulations on your new granddaughter, Suzy! Glad it all went well. You must be such a massive support to your daughter. Please feel free to share any details. I love hearing about other people's grandchildren!

Well done on sticking to your healthy eating despite the challenges at your daughter's house! It seems like it has really clicked for you this time. Amazing that you are not even craving sweets, despite being hungry! It's so inspiring for me to read this. Also that you have more energy since adjusting your diet. Reminding me that we really don't need all that stuff! It will really help with the exercise and motivation too. I'm so pleased for you and impressed with your commitment.

I like the advice about keeping nuts in the car, Snoozie. I might do that myself. Here you can get little snack packs of nuts, seeds, etc. and I sometimes take one of them if I don't know when I'm going to get a chance to eat. Love the babybel cheeses too. I don't know if either of you have it but here there is a high protein babybel - I haven't checked how much protein and if it makes a difference! It's the black one (as opposed to red).

My only tip at the moment is herbal teas again: it's an old one when I was trying to give up evening snacking (and wine drinking!), but it does help. I miss having hot drinks later in the day when I'm avoiding caffiene, and it's nice to have something while reading a book or watching a film.

only have a sec but Vail the mix of the babybel bag had black wrapper ones in them.. it's a mix of 3 different ones i thot it was just flavours so i'll have to check as i havent tried those yet. maybe it's the protein one thanks for that info! i havent made the jump to herbal but weirdly being the coffee addict i am, i drank a ton of tea while i was at my sisters for the 3 months in winter (albeit it was to just to keep warm!!) but now i really enjoy a cup of tea in the evening while watching tv!

suzy yes.. a big spike in blood sugar (when you eat something high carb on it's own without any fibre or protein to slow it down) usually causes drowsiness or lethargy its one of the signs.. (that said im not a medical thats just from persona experience and talking to others) and yup its very diff from just being physically tired from exertion …

im off to class but i am tired this morning took the retiree group to our Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum yesterday; first time we did kind of a "road trip" as its about an hour away.. it was amazing and the Lancaster (if your'e familiar with it) was inside for repairs.. i've seen it in the air flying over many times but seeing it up close on the ground.. unreal.. anyway im not used to being on the go for 10 hrs like you two are .. so im a slowpoke this morning ha. but have the weekend to catch up and may actually get to some of the chores like cleaning or laundry!!

That museum visit sounds great! How did you get there if it was an hour away? Public transport or car pool? I actually live about 8 miles away from an air museum. I haven't been there for ages but my grandson has visited with his parents. I'm also less a mile from a massive Railway Museum. It's practically at the end of my street! (Actually long story, but it's a bit of a sore point. They are making it bigger but actually building it ON the street, so residents can no longer walk into town. There is a way to get there, but it's a long detour. Very frustrating when we are supposed to be encouraging walking!).

To be honest, I struggle to manage 10 hours too. I'm really not functioning well towards the end of a work day. Well done for going to your class anyway. Reminding me that I need at least do my exercises today. Housework and gardening wiped me out yesterday (by gardening I just mean trying to clear a bit of the overgrown weeds, nothing exciting!). I haven't actually been to the gym for my exercise on prescription, and got a call from them wondering if I wanted to cancel it for now. I'm kind of torn … I can do the exercises at home, so it just seems to be making it harder for me to get myself to the gym, and also pay for it (it's on prescription but you still pay a reduced rate), when I could maybe spend the money on a class that interests me more. It would be different if I had a personal trainer as part of the programme.

I really love tea and coffee but don't want to have too much caffiene! And apparently decaff coffee still has a fair bit. I do drink decaff tea but it's not as nice, and I have proper coffee most mornings. It's a bit of a low-cal treat! I gave up all caffiene a couple of years ago, but it has crept back in! And I don't think it's bad if you don't overdo it.

i hear ya Vail on trying to decide what to do about the gym.. as u said even tho its on script its only partially covered and you fork out the rest… so you didnt get a personal trainer session with the script? so who set up the exercises that you do at home now? just curious.. here normally if you join a PAID gym.. you get like one "free" session with a PT (free as in part of the cost!!) or sometimes you get 3 sessions… i got the idea (here) you go.. they assess you and assign the exercises, then u go to the gym every day or 3x a week or whatever for a few weeks, then u get a 2nd assessment where they check u r doing them right and add or change the routine.. so with your script gym thing, are you just supposed to figure out what to do on your own, like the script is kinda for the actual gym time itself? i totally get what you're saying tho about whether you should spend the $ you are paying to supplement the script on an actual class you might enjoy more. That said.. winter is coming; travel can be a pain to go to a class, BUT.. i do like the social aspect of a class.. where you get to interact with other people..and for me that's a big part of it as i live alone… so i think the attraction for me with both pickeball and now the TC is that its not just me doing it at home by myself (besides which i did that during covid lockdown.. online class and i cheated left right and centre cause nobody was watching me LOL).. even tho there isnt a lot of talk going on during the class or during pb, there is during the break and while you're waiting to play and i quite enjoy that.. so i get why it's a totally hard decision for you… i don't know what i would do in a similar situation

Speaking of paying for stuff … the past few weeks i've been kinda adding up everything i spend $ on.. i did an experiment just out of curiousity and wrote down EVERYTHING .. from bills (i can't believe what im paying for my internet, cell phone tv blah blah.. ) and even every coffee i drive thru and get.. the biggest shock was actually totalling up everything (like the internet/cell.. it doesnt sound like much when i see how much each one costs.. but when i total it all up its like WTH .. and i've been using cash only for about a month.. (well except for big expense stuff like gas for the car) and it's been quite an eye opener.. just an example.. i got a notice my "tech support" thing for my laptop was coming up.. where you buy like an extended warranty so if anything goes wrong at all.. you're covered..?? well.. its like $294 for a year… so i paid it last year….. but my laptop only cost me like $450 a few years ago.. so i was like omg… i've paid MORE for if something goes wrong than the laptop itself cost!! so i will be cancelling that on monday LOL.. and when i totalled how many "drive thru" coffees in a month? i realized i could buy the kcups of my fav coffee shop and make it at home instead lol.. not to say we aren't entitled to our little luxuries at this stage.. i'm ALL for indulgences we earned em… but paying for stuff im not using.. or spending $$ on stuff that really isnt an indulgence just a habit… it was def an eye opener for sure.

im watching a gorgeous sunset out my window as i type.. but hating that it's dark now by 530pm now.. ugh means winter is def on the way!!

Thank you both, so much! I have both my kids, their spouses and all four grandchildren here for the holiday! It has been hectic and fun. I’ve done remarkably well with my eating and drinking so I’m very proud of myself. lol. I’m really hoping that a couple days with a glass of wine and small slices of pumpkin pie will not tank my A1C results in January. If my body can’t handle me minimally indulging once a month or two then maybe there really is a serious issue with my blood sugar. Before I go on a lifelong medication I really need to know that I’ve done everything I possibly can through diet and exercise. Speaking of which, I have GOT to start a consistent exercise routine.

How are you two doing? It turned super cold here the past couple days. How about your weather? It’s so easy to just stay inside and eat the wrong things when it’s cold out. It’s definitely soup weather here.

Glad you had fun! And managing your eating and drinking at the same time!

I have been away for the weekend at the seaside. Lots of eating and drinking! Well, I didn't drink too much, but I ate loads, fish and chips, icecream (well, it was the seaside) chocolate, cake, etc. I got quite frustrated with struggling with getting around. It was really hilly and I couldn't join my friends on the walks. But I've had a really nice time. I've been feeling kind of sad and anxious and it was good to get out of the house and be sociable.

The weather has been cold, windy and rainy here. Some mild flooding in some areas, but not at my house. It was a little bit scary driving over to the seaside, but I needed to do it as apparently I invalidated the warranty on my car battery due to not doing enough mileage! The views were amazing driving over the moors so it was a nice drive, but kind of wished I was a passenger so I could get a proper look!

I’m so glad you got out and did something fun! It can do wonders for your mental health, which also affects your physical health. I wish you could have participated in the walks but maybe that’s something you set as a goal once you get your surgery. It would be great to have that incentive for your recovery.

I know what you mean about being a passenger. I feel like I missed so much by being the driver when we traveled all over Scotland. My husband refuses to do a bus tour group though. We’re planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park next September with another couple. I’ll be able to share the driving and we’re going to be hiking a lot. I have nine months to get in better shape!

By the way, I’ve lost 16 pounds so far! I don’t know why my fitness pal only shows some of it. I managed to not gain weight over Thanksgiving! Unbelievable!

Wow, Suzy! 16 pounds! That's phenomenal! Just shows how committed you are. Even without Thanksgiving would be a totally amazing weight loss, but to do it over Thanksgiving as well! How are you feeling with it? Do you feel lighter/better?

Thank you! I do feel like I have more energy. I’m not completely wiped out all the time. I think that might be because I’m not eating sweets so my blood sugar is more level. My women’s club had their Christmas party last night and two people asked me if I had lost weight and told me I looked good. It made my night! I feel very in control right now and hope I can hang onto my momentum.

That's really good to hear. It's nice to see the numbers on the scale but also very nice to have more energy, AND to feel in control. How is your baby granddaughter doing?

She’s doing great! I got to watch her yesterday before I took the other two to swim lessons. I forgot how hard it is to walk and rock constantly. It’s so hard on your back!
