Hello, and welcome!
I'm 69 now, but started weight loss back in 2015 and a few months into that started using MFP. I was able to lose to a healthy weight, which was about 50 pounds loss, and have been at a healthy weight since, 9+ years so far. In my experience, MFP can be a good tool, if we commit to the process and use it.
Weight loss can happen at any age, and so can fitness improvement, though our challenges may differ at different points in life.
One of the things that makes MFP a good tool for me is its concept that we can set up our basic calorie goal assuming we get no exercise, then log exercise when we do some, and eat those calories, too.
As I age, I won't deny that I have more or longer incidents of injury/recovery, surgery/recovery, and that sort of thing. Because I'm very used to using MFP that way, the times when I've reduced my exercise or other activity have still been periods of weight stability for me, as long as I eat the lower number of calories appropriate to that reduced activity level. When actively recovering, I prefer to hold my weight steady, so I get the calories I need for best and fastest healing. If I'm trying to lose weight, I hold off on doing that until the acute phase of healing is over. Understanding how my activity level relates to my eating routine and bodyweight has been super useful to me.
I'm cheering for you to succeed here: The quality of life improvement is very much worth the effort it takes to achieve it!
