Newish-dietary health challenges

New to the community. Been on MyFitnessPal for 7 years.

70 year old female type 2 diabetic with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and primary hyperparathyroidism.

With these challenges I struggle with my diet.

Does MyFitnessPal offer guidance/suggestions for anyone having any dietary health issues?

    Hello, and welcome!

I'm turning 70 in a couple of weeks, but have been on MFP for a while - lost weight, now maintaining. Full transparency, I don't have diabetes or hyperparathyroidism or NAFLD. I'm hypothryroid (I know that's very different), and used to have high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

I don't know whether the specific plans in MFP Premium+ offer specific help with the health conditions you have.

The MFP Blog does have some specific articles about managing diabetes. You can search in the blog (use the magnifying glass icon) for keywords like "diabetes". There are a few articles that mention NAFLD, but only a few.

Some of the non-profit organizations that specialize in particular diseases also offer eating guidance, such as the American Diabetes Association, American Liver Foundation, etc. The UK has a site for hyperparathyroidism that includes eating advice, parathyroiduk.org. (Other countries may have similar things.)

In general, the overall dietary strategies for managing health conditions have quite a lot of overlap. With certain caveats, it's generally about eating primarily lean protein sources, veggies, fruits, perhaps dairy, whole grains. Usually, the best eating styles for each aren't in opposition to each other.

For me, logging my food here helped me gradually tune up my routine habits so I was eating more in line with the nutritional goals that best support my health and reverse negative health conditions, or at least minimize the worst effects of those health conditions. I hope you may find the same.

    Best wishes!
