New to my fitness pal -
Hi, name is Cheryl, my doctor recommended this site. I am trying now to learn how to use this site. I am struggling to lose weight. I really need to lose weight. I had two stents put in my heart in May of this year. That was my wake up call. I am almost 78 years, have two cats and a wonderful husband. My doctor has given very clear instructions and what he wants me to do diet wise and I need help to be accountable. I need to learn carbs, protein and calories in the portions according to my doctor's orders.

hello my name is Pam and I’ve been here since 2023 doing the same. Losing weight to improve my heart health and decrease my arthritis pain. I saw a dietician at first who used this app to set my goals and check on me between office visits. I’ve been on my own for about a year. I’m down 40 lbs which is fine for me (1/2 to 1 lb per week loss). I liked working with dietician because she taught me how to read labels, how to eat out and not overdo, and portion sizes. Hope you are having success and contact me anytime.

welcome to MFP, Cheryl.
Same as @PamJSch1 my dietician was actually the one who recommended MFP to me. Strongly recommend using a registered dietician. (In the US, registered dieticians are degreed professionals. Anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist”: the youngster on social media, the guy at the gym, the person pushing health bars from some multi-level marketing outfit. There’s no rigorous certification process for nutritionists.)
You may be able to get discount visits. Is your gym or health insurance. My health insurance offered free phone consultations, but I found the in person visits much more effective.
Time is precious (and expensive) so go in armed with a list of questions. Make sure they know you’re using MFP. On my last visit my dietician simply took my phone and scrolled through my food diary. She immediately picked up on a couple of things that might be increasing my inflammation, so I adjusted those.
There is a learning curve to MFP for sure, , but you are welcome to post here if you have any questions. People are very helpful, and a lot of us are older as well, so have “that” insight.
