I am trying My Fitness Pal to lose 40 lbs. I am nearly 80 and need encouragement. Even though meals are controlled, I need exercise to lose weight. Please reply if you drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, and if so do you think it is important for your weight loss. Ted

hi, Ted.
Do you have a gym nearby with an Aquafit or Water Aerobics program? They are excellent exercise, and very low impact, and they also offer a social aspect. Lots of laughing and carrying on. We have folks in their 90’s in the classes.
Also check and see if (if you are in a larger town or suburb) there is a hospital affiliated gym or one with a senior focus nearby
My gym started as a hospital owned cardiac rehab facility many years ago, opened to hospital personnel, and then ultimately opened to the public They offer everything from cardiac classes to chair yoga, gentle yoga, stretching, Parkinson’s boxing, aquafit, and more They maintain a full schedule and deliberately aimed at all ages. At the times I work out in the weight room, we have many men who are in their 70’s and 80’s working out with free weights and in equipment Again, can also be very social Those guys can sure hee-haw, as my dad used to call it.
You may have something similar in your area. We found out about ours by accident Most locals have no idea such a fabulous place exists.Ask your doctor (sadly, even most the docs don’t know about the gym or that it’s open to anyone, even though it’s located in the hospital complex! The gym regularly sends staff out to visit each doctors office to “remind” them .) or even better, if you’ve used a physical therapist, ask them They stay on top of things like that better than the docs do .
The price is super reasonable, and ours includes discount massages, training and dieticians. Classes are included in membership, and all equipment (mats, towels, sweat towels etc) is provided. It’s also kept up to a hospital standard of cleanliness, and because clientele skews older, staff is regularly trained on emergency protocol. I’ve seen it in action and just sent them a thank you card for their excellent handling of a recent health emergency I witnessed

PS I drink water when I need it. The best way to judge if you’re getting adequate hydration is by the color of your urine.
The goal is a “pale straw” color.
Too yellow indicates not getting enough water. Too clear can indicate too much water.
