Obesity Genes?

I have a gene that is associated with Obesity. 17.7% of the European population has it. Here is the description-
rs5082(C;C)
"saturated fat contributes to obesity. rs5082(C;C) associated with increased Body Mass Index and food intake in the Genetics of Lipid Lowering Drugs and Diet Network (GOLDN) Study. news Tufts University scientists said they discovered men and women carrying the CC genotype demonstrated higher body mass index scores and a higher incidence of obesity, but only if they consumed a diet high in saturated fat."

Has anyone else had their genes mapped? Did you discover anything significant about your metabolism that may help you on your weight-loss journey?

    That's not an "obesity gene".

It may be a "improves metabolization of saturated fats" gene, but that is an entirely different thing.

Would you be so kind as to answer the question presented please?

Love it .. too funny, especially when someone thinks they have some far out reason for being obese. Uh ... sorry, eating too much makes you obese. Straight and simple.

I think you need to re-read the last sentence of our quote which says "…but only if they consumed a diet high in saturated fat" so yes, if you over eat and consume a diet high in sautéed fat you will be obese ….if you eat under maintenance then you will not be obese...

Yes I had my genes mapped. I discovered I have a gene that gave me a 97% chance of getting breast cancer, an 86% chance of recurrence of breast cancer, and a 40% chance of ovarian cancer.

    Tradesies?

Would you be so kind as to answer the question? I plan to lower my intake of saturated fats. I found it interesting. That_is_it. I was not asking for you to be flippant or rude. If the post applies to you great. If not, kindly take yourself to a place relevant to you.

Here you probably did not understand or missed it. Here is the question-

Yes, I have had my genes mapped.

No, there isn't anything to learn from that that isn't already covered by "eat at a caloric deficit to lose weight".

Lol! No thank you. I did get a few dings in those departments but not close to that. Are you doing anything different? Did you go to a specialist or changed your diet? Are you glad you know or not? There are some things I can't do anything about on my report, but watch my saturated fat intake? I can do that.

I want to go to a genetic counselor for a better idea of what everything means but there does not seem to be one in my area who takes my insurance. I just have the data and the research studies available. There is no expert to weigh the different genes against each other.

Obviously if I eat too many calories I'll have issues but it looks like the type of calories are an issue as well. I've decided to reduce, but not eliminate altogether, the saturated fat in my diet.

I saw that too. I'm not male. I find it interesting that it can increase the risk of obesity with a high sat. fat diet but also reduce the risk of coronary disease in males. I'm trying to find a genetics counselor or a similar professional in my area to help me navigate the information in my report. It contains a lot of information. I only posted about the one gene because I thought it relevant to diet and therefore, Myfitnesspal.

Are you posting this because you have the gene and are male?

I know that caloric intake/output is important and that a diet reduced in sat. fat won't work if the total calories are too high. Apparently poster assume I'm stupid or have reading comprehension issues. I_Thought_It_Was_Interesting. I'm_Going_To_Decrease_My_Saturated_Fat_Intake. Period. Since you are one to assume things when they are left out, no I don't plan to increase my caloric intake. I'm not going to exercise less either. Did I miss any other assumptions to had after reading my original post?

Sheesh people are so negative and assume so much. It was meant to be a friendly post, not an affront to any other scientific information available.

I don't need to have my genes mapped, all I have to do is look at old photos of my female ancestors. Pretty much all of them were built just like me if I let myself go. Big, round apple shaped women all the way back to my 4th great-grandmother.

I think you need to reread it. You assume that I did not read it. I plan to reduce my intake of saturated fat. Period. I did not say well heck! I can eat whatever I want as long it's not saturated fat! I did not say, throw away the exercise equipment because I'm cutting out saturated fat. You may have thought I wrote that but I did not. I found the information interesting and I plan to act on it in a manner that would make most physicians happy. I thought others might have found something helpful too.

By the way, I have other genes that make me less likely to be obese too!
