Not Easy - A Learning Experience

Just got home from spending a 4-day weekend with my daughter and family - it's out-of-state (Michigan to Illinois). I tried very hard to get in my 5/6 small meals a day, but wasn't entirely successful. The first obstacle was the 4-hour drive. The weather turned warm (mid-40's) in Naperville and we were on the go all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I was fine getting protein/food in the mornings and evenings - in between not so easy as we ate out twice. The first time I they had tomato soup, so I was able to get that with some crackers, and the next day Clam Chowder and saltines, milk.

The hardest part was my grandson had all these great foods: shrimp, grouper, pizza and it was all I could do not to reach over and take a bite, but I did not. It was my head, not my stomach that was wanting it. Probably because I am still on pureed and want real food. Exercise was a problem, although we did do an awful lot of walking and went bowling one evening.

Hope all had a good weekend and hope you have a GREAT week. Getting back on track.

This time change is kicking me in the behind. Illinois is already an hour behind Michigan and my body will take a week or more to get back on track. A Very Tired Friend,

Karen

Traveling, even if it's a short day trip, is always hard for me. There is something about not being in my own home/environment. Traveling removes me from my normal.

I always have a plan, but almost never stick to it 100% in these situations.

Good job staying away from your grandson's goodies. That is something I'm good at, too, staying away from the bad things. It's typically just the scheduled eating that gets messed up a bit.

I had to travel to a family wedding in NY when I was about 8 weeks post surgery. I called my sister in NY and had her pick up some protein drinks, and I brought protein bars for the 5 hour plane ride and a few extra just in case. I was able to completely stick with the program, no problem. The food options at the wedding were very post-WLS friendly too, I was able to have some fish and a little bit of sweet potato. I also went away for a few days recently, and I made sure that as a plan B I at least had some protein bars. I have found that while traveling and dining out, there is always an option for me. Even early on, I had to go to a business lunch, and the restaurant had soup that I was able to eat. If not, I had a can of Pure Protein in my bag and I would have not hesitated to sit there and drink it!

Garber is on track; carry protein bars, drinks, almonds etc. with you when you travel. I did a NY to Key West vacation 3 months post op. We drove both ways - 17 total days. Ate out everyday. A little pre planning goes a long way.
