Hi there, I'm new here and i'm wondering if any of you have difficulty losing weight during your monthly visit? For the past couple of days I can't seem to lose anything, and it certainly isn't for a lack of trying, lol. How long does it take (after your visitor arrives) for the weightloss to continue?
Thanks!

Welcome to MFP! I only lost 1 pound while I was on mine this past week. I think next time I'm going to try and take a diuretic the week before and the week during just to get rid of excess bloating I seem to still have. I will say that exercise made mine alot more bearable this month, I didn't seem to have the backache and cramps I usually had.

We all seem to gain weight at that TOM (time of month) because we retain water. Stop weighing yourself so much. Once a week is plenty. If you weigh yourself more frequently, you'll drive yourself nuts, because our weight fluctuates over the course of a day, week, month, etc. I can fluctuate as much as 5 lbs from morning til night. I weigh myself on Friday mornings after I get out of bed and go potty. That's it.

    Why would you do that?

Lots of women experience a temporary gain during their period. There's no reason to manipulate the scale, better to get used to it and know that it's ONLY a temporary gain that you're likely to experience time and time again. Instead, recognize that the overall trend should be a downward one if you're dilligent the rest of the month.

I go up anywhere from 3 to 7 pounds during that time. Thankfully it's all gone the week after.

it's just a temporary gain. I actually gain my weight during ovulation rather than my actual menstration. Two weeks before my monthly I gain anywhere from 3-5lbs. I just ignore it, it always goes away right after :)

I agree with those who said not to worry about the temporary gain. Also I have heard in Weight Watcher's meetings that our calorie requirements go up during that week. So if you have a temporary gain, or even if you eat more that week, keep the big picture in mind. I personally don't weigh that week at all, but I keep exercising (yes, it does help with the cramps!) and am am always excited to weigh after it is over. Once all that water weight is gone, I sometimes get a nice surprise.

Thanks gals, I feel much better knowing this; I do weigh myself every day so getting on the scale three days in a row and seeing my weight go up has been quite frustrating. I know I should only weigh once per week but I can't help myself! lol. I usually end up weighing every morning when I wake up so at least the time is consistent. Thank you so much for a quick response!

I agree with most of the above. Ignore it. Know that when it's over you will have a drop in weight if you have continued on! Just take a break from the scale, if that helps.

Unless you gain stupid amounts of water weight a diuretic will just throw the fluids balance out of kilter as well as salt and sugar levels, which could cause problems with weight loss.

I can gain a lot in water at my TOTM but then I have problems with water retention due to a lung condition and have to take an occasional prescribed diuretic to deal with that. I have lost 16lbs in 2 days just by taking one tablet now THAT IS a substantional gain. When you weigh in around your TOTM just put the the letters TOTM and every woman will know exactly what you mean.

I get this too. The week before my period and the week of my period I can't loose an ounce. Then of course I get so mad that I freek about having a tumor or some disease that's messing with my body and needs to be surgically removed before I can get back on track of reaching that elusive goal of only 15 more pounds. Then I scurry to make up the difference during the free 3 weeks of the month. Maybe the paranoia is the hormones talking, but I just can't take getting off track because of something so stupid as water retention during that time of the month. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. It's hard to ignore. I weigh myself every day too so I don't get off track. It's aggrivating and it does drive me crazy, but weight is the one thing in life we can control and that's hard to let go of. I guess as long as we are trying during that time of the month, we know we aren't getting off course.
