Mangoes

I bought some mangoes for breakfast smoothies and they are FANTASTIC. Problem is, they are soo much work to cut up. Anyone have any suggestions to make it a little easier? I'd love to keep eating them, but not sure its worth 20 minutes of cutting around the core and peeling the mango away from the skin.

I use a peeler and get all the skin off. then I just cut slices until I can't cut anymore. Takes only about a minute per mango.0

Gosh - I get my frozen for this exact reason. I never figured out a way!0

I just bought a mango slicer through Pampered Chef.
I just peel the mango, stand it on end and push this slicer down through it.
Til I got this, I NEVER bought mangos cuz I didn't know how to cut them.0 -
Have you looked at the Mango Slicer? It actually goes right through the fruit and gets the pit out. The skin is still on, but you just score the fruit (cut the fruit but not through the skin) and then you invert it... or, you push the skin so that it pushes all the fruit out. If it doesn't fall right off the skin (i.e. you were not all the way to the skin or your cuts are pretty big) you can just take a knife and slide it right along the skin. It's really MUCH easier that way. Don't take the time to try and peel one. Oh -- and don't ever let any of the pit go down a garbage disposal (that's right, I learned that the hard way... and it was only a small piece of the pit).
OR -- and this is my favorite way of a quick cut mango... I buy it frozen, especially for smoothies! Then, it's already chunked for you AND at least in my area is way cheaper and a great way to know that it will never spoil. Since it's frozen, you don't have to add as much ice. May seem like it's not "as good" as fresh mango, but in smoothies, I am happy with it!0 -

This is what I do.0 -
Oh, I LOVE THEM.
I actually buy organic frozen mango chunks from trader joes and whole foods.
When I'm not making smoothies, I literally just put them in tupperware in my fridge for a few hours to thaw out. Quick, painless and cheap (around $3.00)!0 -
Mangos are pretty easy to cut. I usually cube mine instead of making slices.
First, take the fruit and cut a slice off the bottom to make it "square" so you can set it on one end. Look at the bottom, and you should be able to see the bottom of the large flat seed in the middle. Take note of where the seed is.
With the mango standing up, resting on the flat spot you cut off from the base, start a large slice along the outside of the seed A big slab of mango comes off. then do the same with the other side, leaving the seed in the middle. Then slice off the sides of the fruit to make 2 long narrow slices.
Now you have two big flat pieces, and two long narrow ones, with the skin still attached. Take the long narrow slices and lay your knife flat and slide it between the edge of the skin and the fruit, and just press the knife away from you, peeling the fruit away from the skin. Then, take a large piece and score the fruit in cube shapes with your knife, cutting through the fruit but NOT cutting through the skin. Again, take the knife and slide it between the skin and the fruit to "pop" the cubes away from the skin.
I LOVE mangoes, and cubing them this way makes it easy for me to add to recipes or salads, or freeze them for a sweet and tasty summer dessert.0 -
Thanks everyone! I'll have my mom look for the frozen stuff but I live in a small town and the closest trader joe's is 3 hours away (not sure about whole foods but its at least an hour).
@1derwhy: That was what I was going to try with the other one I have. From reading online, they didn't explain it that way and I thought the pit part was much smaller and then about a quarter of the way down the mango (with it on its side) I'd already hit it.
I'm just a smoothie fiend for a quick meal and usually stick to bananas and berries (which are great) BUT I LOOOOVEEE Mango flavored smoothies at cofffee shops and stuff but being able to make them at home is soo much cheaper and it was the most delicious thing I've ever made!0 -
1derwhy explained it perfectly. I have an abundance of mangoes right now from the tree in my yard and that's just how I do it. It's the quickest and easiest way to get it done and the cubes are perfect for freezing and using in smoothies later. In fact, I'm going to have a mango/banana smoothie right now!0

Im a complete mango addict, I dig into the flesh with my nails and peel it off real easy and without waste in seconds, then i eat around the stone like you would a peach. To cut it off and make smoothies i would probs dig at it with a spoon after peeling? x0

All of the local grocery stores around here have Frozen Mango... It's between $2 - $3 a bag. (Albertson's, IGA) I'm from a rural area... so as I put above, I almost always use frozen mango!!0
