I wish I could learn from my past that losing weight sucks. But I never learn. I'll lose a good amount of weight, then gain it back within a matter of months. This is my fourth attempt at losing 30lbs after a 30lb gain. Usually, I'm pretty good about maintaining my eating and exercise habits. But I'm finding it really difficult to do so this time. I'm hoping joining this site will push me along the way. I'm really trying to track everything that I eat -- those little snacks here and there add up, scarily so! At first I wasn't going to add those 2 little triscuits I ate today, but then thought better of it... and realized that was 30 calories I really didn't need. Oh well, I have to remind myself to keep trucking... but I'm really doubting myself right now and wondering if I can do this. My body just isn't responding like it used to. Though I'm competitive and seeing others lose weight motivates me to do the same. So here I am. And I hope I can learn from you all.

Yes, trying to lose weight is hard and gets harder the older we get (speaking from experience). But it is worth it! And you CAN do it!

Don't worry about your ability to keep the weight off in the future, just focus on today... every day. Some days will be harder than others and some days will feel pretty damn good, that's life.

Tracking everything consumed is so important. This is new to me and it is helping enormously. I don't like to add things I know I shouldn't have eaten but I do... and then after seeing the calories on the food log I think about how I probably didn't need to eat whatever it was... just as you said. I think facing it makes it more likely I will choose better options on subsequent days.

Do you do write in a journal or a blog? I am starting a personal journal/photo blog (not online though) so I have something visual to look back at... I want to remember this difficult journey and not return to my bad behaviors of years past. Maybe something like that would be helpful for you.

Good luck to you! Feel free to add me as a friend if you like, I would be happy to try to help you stay motivated. :)

When I first joined here I was feeling the same way, you are feeling right now. I really did not think I would last 2 weeks. I am on my 4th week and its going great. I am taking one day at a time. Setting mini goals also helps. You are right on the competiveness it does help. Especially if you see your MFP friends running in this heat, it sure motivates me to get of my butt and do some kind of exercises. Add me as a friend if you like. Good luck on your journey.
  • Remember that this is a slow and steady marathon that you are running. This whole experience is to better yourself, no one else. I am competitive as well, but if I didn't check that at the door, I would have quit this site when I let myself binge on wine and gourmet cheeseburgers with the rest of the familly. I did not enter my data for those days because I was embarrased. Remember you will have days like that too. Fall back on your mfp friends for support and a kick in the right direction instead of quitting. You can do this.
