Gained 10kg in the past five years. I've been able to shed a few kilos when i go on extreme diets, but i hate that, it's so unhealthy. I cycle 22km per day 3-5x per week, i walk 10-20k steps daily, for the past 6 weeks i've been eating 1200 calories per day and what? 1.5 kilo loss. In SIX weeks. I've had Mirena for 6 years (on my 2nd) and I think it's quite clear the doctors are mistaken when they say it cannot lead to weight gain.

it actually says in the side affects "may cause weight gain" and most doctors tell you this...

But if it is real weight gain and not just water retention then it's because you are eating too much not because you are using BC....

I am on my 3rd 5 year Mirena and I absolutely love it!!! I have never had any problems. It's been great for me. I wouldn't say my periods completely stopped, but they definitely became very light, almost non existent. I could always still feel my body going into "ovulation mode" but then very light spotting sometimes for less than a day. And not having to worry about birth control, hardly even giving it a thought was great!

I have struggled with anxiety and depression since I was a child, I never felt that the Mirena affected those things one way or another. I gained weight, but I feel that was my own poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle more than anything else.

I went through a major transformation years ago and lost upwards of 80 lbs with the Mirena. Unfortunately over the years I slowly gained it all back, but happy for me 🙂 I finally got my butt back in gear in August and have officially lost 35 lbs, again, with the Mirena.

My sex drive did also take a hit, but again, I blame my poor eating habits. It's hard to feel attractive with all that extra weight, even with a very supportive and loving other half. To this day, even though my daughter is now 16 and a little more independent of the family and home (lol), I have always found it hard to switch from "mommy mode" to "sexy wife". I do sometimes have pain and cramping during and sometimes after sex, but nothing that made it unbearable, sorry if this is TMI but if there is pain, he "switches angles, or slows it down" and the pain goes away. It really seems to only happen at a specific angle.

I turn 40 in 2 days and have recently started having heavy, painful, and abnormal periods again. I'm wondering if its pre-menopause, endometriosis, or some other hormonal type changes. Reading through all these posts makes me wonder if maybe the Mirena does have something to do with it, maybe because my hormones are changing, Mirena might not be right for me anymore? ....but more likely it's just a normal part of getting old.

The time stamp is almost up on Mirena number 3, and I have been considering keeping it out for good this time. Again, I've never really had any problems with it, but maybe it's just time to [as one other member said] let nature take its course.

Congrats but I suspect it was mostly water weight as losing 9lbs of actual fat is not healthy nor reasonable if you ate any food at all...

Mirena like all birth control says that the side effects can and do include weight gain, water retention and increased appetite...*shrughs*

Anyone who is choosing a medical process such as this needs to take some responsibility for educating themselves..

Mirena did not work for me and I had it taken out after about a year. I didn't experience any weight gain on it but did notice a slight loss once it was removed.

It took about 3-6 months for all my Mirena related problems to subside, but I have an immune response to silicone (And Mirena was how we discovered it...), which seems to have been the root of the problem and all the water weight. I also had to ditch my contact lenses. >_<

So, I got the Mirena inserted about 2 years ago. When I first got it, I bled for about 3 months straight but honestly just thought it was from the insertion and just my body adjusting so it didn't really bother me. Then after the bleeding stopped, I was suffering through weird dull cramping. Again, I was prepared, my gyno told me that some cramping can happen up to 6 months. Then my period began getting lighter but way way longer. I used to only have a period for about 4-5 days and the last two was spotting, now I don't bleed but I am bloated for almost 3 weeks out of the month. I didn't even notice the weight gain at first until I saw a picture of myself from the week before insertion, wellllll, I finally stepped on the scale and had gained 10lbs in the first 5 months that I was on mirena. Honestly, I didn't put two and two together so I began juicing and increased the amount of times I exercised, I lost NO weight. I was eating about 1200 calories a day and meeting with my trainer and we were dumbfounded but I still didn't think it was my mirena. So, I ended just continuing the intense diet and exercise and about a year later I lost 10 pounds. SO it took ONE YEAR for me to lose 10 pounds. Fast forward to November 2019 and I gained the 10lbs back and an additional 10lbs after increasing my calorie intake to 1500-1800. So I was feeling really defeated but enjoyed my holidays, kept working out and then went on my trip to france in december/january. When I got back, I joined a private gym that worked out intensely 5 days a week and managed to lose 2 pounds in the 2 months that I was with them and then quarantined/social distance. The school I worked at was closed therefore I wasn't going out anywhere and actually went back to eating 1200 calories to make sure I don't more weight. About to weeks ago, I went to go get my annual physical and my PCP told me that my blood pressure is a little high and that my bmi is too high for my size (I am 5'1 and currently 150 pounds) she pointed out that I had gained weight rather quickly in the last 2 years and that some women can gain weight on the mirena. (For reference, before the mirena, I weighed 125 and at my absolute heaviest, I was 135) I don't have kids and I am very active. I am getting my mirena taken out on Friday 7/17/2020. And I'm going to see if I see the same weight loss that others on this forum. I do hope that I lose the weight because it has been really bad on my self esteem and I honestly just don't feel like myself. I've been struggling with wanting to go out and enjoy myself because I feel so self-conscious. I don't know if anyone cares, but I'm going to keep updating this.

I hated it and had it taken out. I gained a bunch of weight, lost interest in sex, and became extra moody. The only good thing about it was not getting my period. Much happier and healthier after removing it.

I love my Mirena and it probably literally saved my life because I was suffering from really, really bad Menorrhagia for a few months and became extremely anaemic. It also affected quality of life in a big way because I basically had a continual period, had to wear dark clothing all the time, sleep on towels and was scared to go places that might not have good toilet facilities. Plus I was burning through sanitary products like there was no tomorrow. The mirena put a stop to the bleeding - in fact, my period has pretty much vanished altogether. I've actually lost all my weight (32kg) while having the Mirena in so it's definitely not impaired weight loss in any way.

I'm lucky though - I have friends who can't have Mirena because it affects their mood/mental health quite badly ...

I feel you! Have been though all that the last few months, including receiving a unit of blood a few weeks ago because my crit, hemoglobin, and ferritin were so low.

However, taking three Prometrium (a bio-identical progesterone) for a few days, then two for a few days, and now one per day reduced and then stopped the bleeding.

Girl, get a damn life or at least start your own mirena-obsessed board and get out of this one.

Yes, I feel this. I'm getting mine taken out this Friday because I have never weighed past 135 and now I can't get passed 150 no matter what I do. I'm going to let my body just reset (I'm currently not sexually active and well CONDOMS) for like 3-4 months to see how I feel.

One thing to ponder, that I rarely read about, is what about sensitivity to Progestin? Doctors and other commenters are quick to say you gain weight (only) when you eat too many calories for what your body needs; but I rarely see room for a discussion about water retention due to an allergic reaction or sensitivity to Progestin. I wake up almost every day with soreness especially the joints in my feet and ankles), bloat and an overall blah. Three weeks ago I put myself on a 1200 calorie diet and took up walking 45-60 minutes/5 days a week. Only 1.5 lbs down and that was only after I had my cycle ( still having week long spotting episodes more than a year after insertion).
Earlier this year ( right before covid), I was on a mission to figure out what was happening to me. I got my blood and saliva tested- all came back normal. But none of the test included sensitivities to Progestin, only estrogen. So when people chime in and say all is good with their mirena, I don't doubt it, everyone's got different chemical make-ups; but lets agree that when people express frustration over weight gain, depression and soreness, that it is real and people have had relief from the symptoms and side-effects with removal. I'm also inclined to add that some people's bodies may be swelling or be over in distress due to a foreign object being in their body.

I despised my mirena and had it out last year. I had 0 interest in sex with it in, it made me moody, and I gained a bunch of weight. Now, I wasn’t trying to lose weight back when I had it in, BUT I also didn’t change my eating habits after getting it and I gained 20 lbs.

Well.. where do I start with my mirena coil journey! ‘Hell’ is the word I’d use.
I suffer with endometriosis and had a laparoscopy in 2019, my private specialist recommended the mirena coil as a progesterone only option as this helps symptoms of endometriosis. I thought this would be a great idea seeing as my symptoms before my laparoscopy were awful. I had fibroids, large cysts on my right ovary and severe scarring on the outside of my uterus. I had the coil inserted at the same time as my operation, so when recovering I thought the pain was from the surgery. After feeling the same pain for 6 months following from this I started to realise maybe it was the coil that still hadn’t settled in. This is when I noticed the weight gain, and by weight gain it was SO noticeable. I have always been a slim build, weighing 8.5 stone before having the coil inserted. Just 6 months after I was over a stone heavier and the weight gain didn’t stop there!! I thought I was going bonkers as I couldn’t lose it, I was having personal training sessions as well as running and I was putting on weight not losing it. The bloating made me look 6 months pregnant and was just embarrassing. I couldn’t wear fitted clothes anymore without people asking when I was due, I just lost all confidence. If it wasn’t for the voice in the back of my mind telling me the mirena coil was helping my endometriosis I would have got it taken out a lot earlier. Here I am 1 year 2 months later and today I have had the damn thing removed AT LAST! This is my first time reading this forum but it assures me even more that I’ve done the right thing now. It’s way to early to notice any difference but I already feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I will update on here how I’m feeling over the next few weeks/months, but I’m hoping from reading other comments that I will finally start to lose the nearly 2 stone I’ve gained!!
I’m sure the mirena coil works for some people out there, but I am so glad I’ve had it removed and will never go back to it.

Sezxy Stef, you have been going out of your way to invalidate other women and their problems with Mirena for almost ten years now - girl, you ok? I hope Bayer is paying you to relentlessly promote them because otherwise you seem to just enjoy invalidating others own experience. Seems depressing

It's been 2 years since she posted. And you joined just to drag up a zombie thread to point it out. Something certainly seems depressing...
