Can I just vent for a moment? Both of my kids have celiac, I've never been diagnosed (blood work was negative) have no symptoms but eat gluten free because it's just the lifestyle we have with two kids. My mom was diagnosed (maybe) after my kids and now is on an independent mission to diagnosis everyone she knows with celiac disease.
I got so frustrated with her last night when she told me "we" can't eat miso. She thinks I'm celiac because I have hypo thyroid (which is the result of damage from a severe car accident). And informed me what is bad for me. The wild thing - I'm very athletic, I monitor my body and probably know it better than most people would ever dream of knowing their bodies.
I just get so annoyed with those individuals who make it their mission to change the world. It just makes it harder on those of us who try to not get exposure to things through normal channels. I would never dream of yelling at a waiter because something came wrong on the order - all that does IMO is make it harder cuz the waiter then thinks all celiacs are freaks. You can kill more flies with honey is my perspective. Educate and ask forgiveness is easier than a out of control whack attack.
This is year 10 gluten free for our family and my kids, I think I have it figure out. Tests are showing no contamination, and when it does happen, it's mild and we are able to cope. But really, I'm so happy there is so much more awareness now than 10 years ago, things have already gotten easier, more accessible and less cross contamination but standing on her soap box about it is really annoying to me.

sorry you are having to deal with this. it sounds like your mom doesn't understand how genetic things work. that they can 'skip' a generation or a kid, and specific to celiac, while you may carry all of the celiac genes, they may never get turned on. i think you live and eat the way we do here. i am the only one in my household with gluten allergies. alot of the dinners and meals i make are gluten free, as it is way easier to make one meal for a group than 2, but it doesn't stop me from having bread, pasta, pizza, cookies, crackers etc in the house. its ME who has the allergy. its what i decide to eat and put in my mouth. of course i think if it was a young child in our home with it, we would probably not have those things in the house as i would feel like i was 'teasing' my kid. it sounds like your mom is still having a hard time realizing it is SHE who has the issue and that life does not tiptoe around those with celiac. it is our job to tiptoe around life, diet wise that is. and honestly, i am 100% ok with that. i thank my lucky stars the thing that god decided to give me was an allergy to something i need to avoid, not something that was fatal etc. we are pretty careful for contamination too.
if your thyroid disease was truly due to trauma from the car accident, then there is no reason to think you will have an issue with celiac. sounds like you are in the know for your body. good luck with mom. hope she comes to grips with the changes in her life.0
