How to communicate with a Bench Press spotter?

I'm talking mostly about the random gym-goer you ask for a spot. I've had a few good spots, but I'm thinking I'm cheating myself because a lot of these guys are grabbing the bar if the press is a bit slow on the way up. I've said "only help me if I fail the rep", but nobody seems to get that.

Also, does anyone else feel kind of awkward when you're asking for a spot (especially when it's not huge weight =/)?

EDIT: Also, do you still count these reps if they do grab the bar? I have no clue how much force they're exerting to spot me like this so I'm just hesitant as to whether or not I really am cheating myself or not.

Tell them to only help if you ask. I try to go constantly around the same times and usually run into the same people and made buddies that way who are more useful and you are to him also.

As for someone you don't know, say "I'm trying for 6, can you jump in if I say ASSIST?"

A good spotter will create the illusion of actually helping you until you actually need the help. I usually put two fingers under the bar and put very little pressure if they're stalling, then grip if they're failing. Just let them know not to grip the bar unless you pretty much stall.

And yes, I count those reps, they're great for building strength.
