I'm thinking about starting ballet when I go to college in the fall, hopefully I will be the 145lbs/65kg thats my goal weight then. But I'm very uncoordinated and no so flexible. Will the ballet help me with that or will I just have a hard time and be the worst one there?

Ballet will help with coordination and flexibility. You will start with smaller movements to begin with but if you keep working it as far as you are comfortable each time you'll gain results quickly. It is a great workout for the legs and core. Make sure you have fun with it!

It'll be awesome. And I'd encourage you to sign up even if you are not at your goal weight, because structured exercise that you enjoy will only help you get to your goals. BTW, I  ballet with a passion.

Good luck to you! I love ballet! I danced for 10 years, and miss it horribly. I just can't afford the classes, which is the only thing holding me back!

I was in the BEST shape of my life when I was dancing a lot! When I was about 18 I took ballet twice a week, tap 3 times a week, and jazz twice a week. My arms and back never looked so good! So much core strength used and it improves your posture like none other. Have fun!!

I LOVE Ballet, and can't wait until I am at a point where I can take Ballet classes also, I have some DVD's with Ballet workouts and I love it. I love to dance, any dance but Ballet is my first (dance) love,

I took my first ballet class when I was 40. Seriously! I had always wanted to take it, but it wasn't an option when I was a kid (we could never afford it) and later in life I was always too intimidated to try. BUT I was determined to do it at 40 - and I did! It is an AMAZING workout, and great for your legs and core.... and it is FUN! It should definitely help with your flexibility and coordination, but be prepared - it is hard work, and you will really have to work at it. But if you do, the results will be great!

Go for it - you'll be glad you did!!!

I took my first ballet class when I was about 29. I loved it!!!!!!! If I could find someplace to do barre exercises now I would go in a heartbeat. I was such great exercise, very challenging. I had minor problems with some of the smaller more precise movements, like petit battement. I've never been in such good shape as when I was taking dance lessons all of the time.

Envious! I was a competitive figure skater, did years of supplemental ballet training and loved every minute. Loved the body awareness and the strength it gave me (my jumps improved drastically). The best teacher I had didn't start her training seriously until college and she went on to dance professionally. She always told me it was never too late to start! Have fun!

Ballet is wonderful! I teach Ballroom dancing and that is also a great form of excercise. In beginning because your body is not used to it you'll probably loose a considerable amount of cals. Since Ive been doing it for over 10 years my body is now so used to it I dont loose as much unless im doing vigorous dancing. Have fun!!

When I gained weight in my early 20's I promised if I lost the weight I'd start ballet. I did lose it all but due to other things (marriage etc) I never fulfilled the promise to myself. I then gained all the weight back and I'm now in my 30's trying to lose it again. LOL maybe I should at least have a taster session if I get close to my goal so I'll have fulfilled my promise! Probably too old though.
  • did ballet for over 15 years of my life and taught for about 4 years. loved it even through the pain of point shoes! you'll get pilate moves in there and all the core work! it gives you grace and confidence if you stick with it! good choice!

Hi, sorry this is late, but I just saw this post :)

You will LOVE ballet and what it will do for your coordination and flexibility...but you need to be willing to stretch/practice outside of class.

I did ballet and competitive dance for almost 15 years when I was a kid, but quit before university. I'm now 31 and went back to dance after almost 10 years off, and was TERRIFIED because I'd gained so much weight, and hadn't done anything in ages. It's amazing how fast you can be whipped into shape by a ballet class! I've now lost over 30lbs, and am up to dancing 4 times a week...I forgot how much fun it can be! I'm back on pointe again which was a HUGE goal of mine, and I'm super excited.

I would advise you to find a well trained teacher who has a focus on body allignment and proper technique. Anyone can bend their knees or kick their leg in the air and say they're doing ballet, but withought proper allignment etc. you won't be getting all the benefits and you could even hurt yourself. Dance is super fun, but it is somewhat detail oriented. If possible try to go twice a week so you can develop your muscle memory faster...or just you tube ballet instruction and practice at home when you can...you don't need a lot of space, just something to act like a 'barre'...kitchen counter is great!

Feel free to friend me if you have any questions once you start...of just to be 'friends'...I'm always looking for other dance people!
