    Hi Everyone,

I think we will have to rename this thread the "melted sneakers" --it was 103 degrees F in the Portland (OR) area today, and we have two more days of this.:grumble: Thank goodness for my AC in the house, the car and the office.:drinker: :drinker:

I feel for people in Seattle. There are far fewer homes with AC, and even they are being threatened with triple digit temperatures this week.

As for me, for those who might not yet have figured it out, I will save you the trouble of guessing and just tell you--I am nuts!!! What else could explain what I did today?

I really wanted to keep my walking program on track, so I decided, I wasn't going to let a little heat stop me. It was about 82 degrees when I started what was supposed to be a 4 mile course, but by the time I was finshed, it was 2 hours (including 15 minutes of water and other breaks) and 5.5 miles later, and about 95 degrees!! :noway: I drank about 40 ounces of water while I was out--thanks to the handy drinking fountain on the trail, which I hit for refills of my water bottle coming and going.

After I finished, I came home, hopped in the bathtub and then went back to work for 4 more hours. I don't expect to have ANY difficulty getting to sleep tonight !!

I have decided to take tomorrow as a day of rest as far as walking is concerned.

I posted a picture of my house---the flowers were better in June:laugh:

It has been hot here----mid 80's which is very hot for us since we don't have air conditioning

I took the dogs to the dog park at noon after lunch---we couldn't go in the morning because I was at line dance. The dogs and I lasted about 30 minutes although they spent a good deal of time in the shade while I walked around the edge.

Jake and I waited until 7:30 to go for a 60 minute walk. It was 86 when we started and 70 when we got home. It's still about 85 in the house.

My hands are sticky so I think I'm done with the computer for the night

    Good Morning,

Had a wonderful day at Great America with the kids. It was perfect weather except for the last hour when it started to rain. We were there from 10:30am to 10pm. I think I went on two rides, one water tubing ride with my DIL and four year old granddaughter and some other ride they tricked me into going on. I mainly was the waiter for the older girls as they rode the rides. I bought them a fast pass which got them 75% off the waiting time so they had a great time. I walked so much I didn't even worry about anything I ate, which really wasn't much.

Barbie, I noticed the picture of your house immediately, it is gorgeous. Is that the view from your house because it is amazing. Thank you for sharing with us. I don't know how you, Jake and Barb walk so much, it is so tiring. I do understand it is probably one of the best forms of exercise but maybe I am just too lazy.

Marie, yes I remember the S&H green stamps, what a hoot that was. We pasted book after book trying to get free prizes. Ah, those were the good old days. I have another two years before my colonoscopy, I was getting one every three years but the last one was so good they said I could wait until five years. I really don't mind the test, it is the preparation that kills me. Since I can't drink that stuff I take the pills, they are horse pills and you have to take them every 15 minutes but the effect is the same. :glasses:

Gayla, I love manicures and pedicures but those pedicures are great. I am very ticklish though so that one part I have to hang on to my chair for dear life. Your color sounds great, I like the darker colors also. I hope they get Neils shoe fixed and he gets some comfort soon. Are you still planning your trip soon?

Well I have a lot of towels and things to wash and today is my gin day so I will get in touch with you later. Enjoy your Tuesday.

    Hi Sandy,

I can't resist asking, if today is your "gin day" is tomorrow a "vodka", or perhaps a "rum" day??  I am reasonably certain you were referring to gin rummy, but thank you for the giggle:bigsmile:

thank you for encouraging me to post a picture of my house. Yes, the view in the back is amazing. When we bought our house, there were several similar ones being built in the subdivision but ours was the only one with this great view. We are at the outside edge of a fenced subdivision with a green belt area along all the fences. The property on the other side of the fence behind us is a large private home with lots of trees so even though our property is an ordinary size house lot, there is the appearance of having a lot of land because of the green belt, the trees, and the private property behind the fence.

I think I've always liked to walk or at least I always walked. My mother encouraged it. She used to say that the next generation would be born with wheels the way children were always asking their parents for a ride.

Finding the right type of exercise is one of the keys to health. About 20 years ago when I was pretty good shape (I was working out at a gym three days a week and going to Jazzercise) I was encouraged to try lap swimming as a form of exercise. I tried it faithfully three times a week for a couple of months and hated every minute of it. It was one of the most boring things I've ever done. So I gave it up and went back to doing what I liked.

    :flowerforyou: Marie
I remember S&H green stamps. I got a lot of great stuff by saving them.

:flowerforyou: Gayla----I've had my fingernails done and loved it. I even had acrylic nails for a year. But I can't stand anybody touching my feet so I've never had a pedicure. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The color sounds great.

I walked for 74 minutes on the trail this morning. Before that, I took the girls to the dog park. It was already so hot that I tried to walk back and forth in the shade. After 35 minutes the girls were ready to come home. Jake is playing golf. He's feeling so much healthier that he's going to ask the cardiologist whether he can try walking nine holes instead of taking a riding cart.

I'm wondering now if I've earned a nap.:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

    Good Morning,

Beautiful day again, thank goodness for A/C. Going for my yearly mammogram this morning (sorry guys) so I have to hustle more than usual.

I have been a very bad girl this week and I feel so guilty. At Great America even though I didn't eat a lot I did eat food high in calories. Yesterday was worse when I again had breaded chicken wings for lunch and then took my granddaughter to the new diner in our little town. There I had a hamburger with some fries and a little chocolate sundae for dessert. Of course this morning my scale let me know I was bad so no more cheating. The problem with getting close to your goal is you feel oh one bad meal won't hurt. That is the cycle I am trying to break. I know you won't hollar at me, but you could remind me that I am here to reach my goal and to maintain that goal. I need some discipline here.

You are good friends and everyone seems on track, please put this caboose back.

    Have a great Wednesday!!

Ypu will get back on Sandy. Don't feel guilty. Everybody has days like that except maybe Barbiecat and Jake. They are our role model and love them for being so delicated.. The thing is just get up and get back on it. You can do it.We all can do it.

    Have a wonderful day. Marie

Sandy, I know exactly what you are saying. I'm almost 20 pounds from my goal but since I've lost so much weight already my friends are starting to tell me I look great and shouldn't lose any more weight. Along with that, Jake has reached his goal and is starting to add extra calories by eating snacks that he didn't eat before. so even though I know that I need to continue the same path I've been on before, I get confusing messages that I can eat a little more and it won't matter.

You'll be back on track today. You know what to do and you know what your goals are. And drink a lot of water :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:

:flowerforyou: Hi, Marie, have a great day:bigsmile:

It is already 75 degrees here before 7 AM. We'll try to walk early.

Hang in there Sandy. Temptation is with us always, and sometimes you have to give in to it just to pump up your resistance for later. How is that for a backhanded rationalization?? Seriously, you had a couple of questionable eating days, and you paid your dues on the scale, so now it is back to business. Not to worry. You CAN do it. You already proved that by how much you have already lost!!:drinker: :drinker:

Can't help but make a comment about the morning temperature. I am about 200 miles south of Barbiecat, and we were at a high of 106 yesterday, and today could reach 108!! Thank goodness for AC. This morning I drove to work at 4:45a (this time without having to comb my hair and put makeup on after the fact--didn't oversleep--now have 2 clocks going in the morning. I am taking no more chances:laugh: )
The outside temperature sensor on my car said it was 74 degrees!!. It is already 96 degrees on my patio.

Supposedly, we have a cooling trend by Friday--"down" to the mid -90's. If it weren't for the fact that it is already too crowded, this would be the time to visit the Southern Oregon coast, where it is staying in the 80's. Further north is no good as there is no onshore winds to cool things off. It was over 90 in Astoria Oregon yesterday, and that might have been a new record high--not sure.

Anyway, have a great day everyone.

Marie, I hope your knees start behaving themselves. Good luck w/ your MRI.

Say your weather is a lot hotter than here in my part of Texas/ 103 is the highest it got here so far this year. We been in the 90's thanks to the rain and clouds.

I am in the prcessed of cleaning my pantry out. No telling what I will find. I have a thow away bag, a church pantry bag.And stuff I will keep.

Hi everyone! I only have a few minutes as we are once again off to get Neil's shoes adjusted. He has a blister and is so unhappy about it. He is back in his splint today. If it's not one thing it is another. Touch wood but the seizures seem back under control this week. Today the meds are increased again, every Wed. we add one more pill. In October he has another EEG and back to the neurologist. We just had an appt. card in the mail for his former neurologist. I was so happy to be able to call and cancel!! It took awhile but we now have a doctor who cares.
Yesterday I spent the day in the city ABM (all by myself) and really enjoyed it. I had to go get tests done at the opthomologist and then did a bit of shopping. I was looking for some capris but the only ones I could find didn't have pockets. I detest pants without pockets! Then I went to the bookstore and decided to have lunch in the little restaurant in the bookstore ABM (yup, I enjoy my own company). I do need to find some friends. So much of our life has been about kids that we have lost touch with many of our friends. Some of our friends have moved away and of course, just because I am on holidays doesn't mean others are!! That said, I did enjoy my day. At the restaurant I had a roasted veggie wrap and gorgeous salad, both beyond good and the most wonderful tea. It was so good I bought some and am enjoying some now. I had bought a newspaper so read the paper and did the sudoku. The only disturbing part was I was sitting very close to a table with 5 nurses and their conversation turned to complaining about mentoring new nurses without being paid extra for it. I was ashamed of them. (I guess I shouldn't be eavesdropping but they were quite loud) One of my highest rewards has been mentoring student nurses. They energize me while they absorb information like a sponge. Whatever happened to a responsibility to give back to our profession? I am proud to be a nurse and part of that means passing on my enthusiasm to new nurses. Ok, I will get off my soapbox now. Sorry, just had to vent!!
We have to run now, have a great day everyone and keep smiling. Gayla

Thanks for the encouragment, I needed it. I am already back on track with my calories now I have to get moving on the exercise. I know I will do it but needed some pushing.

My son lives near Portland and he said they are saying it could get to 107. Since he and his family like cooler weather they are not happy. They should be used to hot weather being from the Chicago area, but that has been a long time. Sounds like the Northwest is getting a terrible heat wave. Our day is really nice, sunny but not to hot. :flowerforyou:

Time for lunch, I am late and not eating small meals is not good. I lose and do better eating more often then I do skipping meals. I think that is true for all of us.

Hope Jeffrey is on his final interview and lands that job. Good luck Jeffrey!!

    Bingo night, wish me luck.

    Hi Everybody, :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

It is still hot here but it seems to be cooling down a bit. I slept better last night and took a nap this afternoon. We have two tower fans, three small fans, and a ceiling fan in the living room. When we lived in Anderson, California near Redding it was over 100 degrees almost every day all summer. We had air conditioning installed in our house right after we bought the house. Here we have only three or four hot days a year. I can put up with anything for a few days. Yesterday I walked over 24,000 steps. Tonight I’ve got just over 15,000 and I’m not going out again.

Jake and I walked for 70 minutes this morning on the trail----at 8 AM it was 75 degrees but there was a lot of shade on the trail. After that, he cut the grass and I had a friend come over for a visit. After lunch we took the dogs to the dog park and they lasted less than 20 minutes. There was no one either at the dog park or the city park because it was so hot.

    :flowerforyou: Gayla
    I love going places ABM
I’m glad to hear that you found interesting things to do. I know what you mean about mentoring. I was a teacher for over 30 years and did my share of mentoring student teachers and I loved it even though there was no extra pay and a ton of extra work.

:flowerforyou: Sandy----it’s too late to wish you luck on bingo but I hope you had a great time.

:flowerforyou: Marie---keep on smiling, you have such a positive attitude and keep us all motivated

The cats are outside where it’s cool and the dogs are lying by the door enjoying the breeze. It’s time for me to think about getting ready for bed.
    Hugs to all,:heart::heart: :heart:

    Marie,

Sorry about giving you a medical problem you don't have. I think I got my threads tied in a knot. There is someone on the 50+ thread who is having knee troubles, and I read that thread just before posting on this one, so my tired old brain got a little foggy!! I had the name right, just the wrong "Marie" there is a different one on the other thread.

I wouldn't wish a colonoscopy on anyone, however, so I hope yours goes smoothly.

The town I live in, outside of Portland, Oregon, hit 107 degrees today, a new all time record. :noway: It broke the previous all time record of 106 degrees--that was set YESTERDAY!!:glasses:

I just heard that Seattle smashed their old all time high temperature of 95 degrees. Today it was 102!!

I used to tell people I live in the "Pacific NorthWET", but I think that will have to be amended 'til this heatstroke--I mean heatWAVE--is over. For now, I am in the "Pacific NorthSWEAT"

I wouldn't say it is hot around here, but when you get into your car and the outside temperature sensor says it is 111!!!!!! THAT is TOO hot!!!:grumble:

IT is a "frosty" 83 degrees on my patio at the moment, a little after 10 pm PDT.

    Good night all.

Jeffrey--keeping my fingers crossed about your interview.

Barbs, I wish the other Marie a speedy recover. And hope I never have knee problems.

We had a good storm come roaring thru here this morning before Daybreak. Poor Sammy was hiding out in the Bathroom. That his Safety room. He heads in there when Jerry is using the weed eater and the lawn mower.

What a sweating weather you guys are having. After a hot June we have had pleasant weather during July. But we still have August to get thru.

You're little dogs are so cute they don't look real. I know you are enjoying them.

I really enjoy reading your post. A good sense of humor.

Hello to the rest of the gang.

    Hi Everyone,

After I posted my latest weather update, I saw another news program that said the high temp for Seattle yesterday was actually 103!!! And, my town actually made it to 108!! Either way, both are all time records for each locale.

I checked the temp when I got off work at 10a. It went up 5 degrees in 45 minutes, and added another 2 degrees in the last half hour so it is now 86 and climbing. This is supposed to be our last triple digit day. I hope they are NOT LYING about that. I am looking forward to a "frosty" temperature in the 90's on Friday.

My doggies are staying close to the AC and the water. They have no desire to walk very fast or very far these days.

    Have a good day

Just a quick note to tell you that on my very slow program I have lost another 2 pounds. Actually I had to relose some of the weight I lost before so I feel good about this change in my status.
Hope you all have a great day -- stay out of the heat!! It is comfortable here and I am going to try to clean my kitchen., maybe even my pantry if I go crazy (likely won't happen).
    Nothing more from Saskatchewan!

    Keep smiling. Gayla

Barbs can you fry an egg on your sidewalk yet?
you can probable poached one in your park car. Gosh that is hot. Hope everyone survive the heat waves. Have they open shelters yet? They do here when it get real hot. So many die from Heat exposer. What cause this spell?

Late post today, was busy this morning and then had a meeting this afternoon. Our weather is great not to hot, not to cool, sunny and comfortable. I only like 90 and above if I am at a pool otherwise the 80's are perfect for me. Those in the North "Sweat" keep cool, stay indoors if possible.

Gayla, congratulations on the weight loss, slow is good, stays off longer that way. Glad you got a day to yourself, I love those kinds of days. I do a lot of stuff on my computer and lately I haven't had time to do anything. Daisy demands a lot of time while getting house broken. Still not there but getting better everyday. Sorry about Neil shoe, hope they fix it and he is out of pain.

Marie, always happy to hear from you and glad your weather has cooled down.

Daisy has a puppy class tonight so dinner will have to be a little early. My neighbor brought us strip steaks because we watch their house while they go to their weekend house. Such great people.

    Will check in later.

:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: The good news is that the heat disappeared as suddenly as it appeared. Today was in the high 60's which was perfect because we had to help some friends move from an apartment to a house (both without air conditioning). Later we took a walk in weather cool enough to require a light jacket.

Last night Jake slept on the hide-a-bed in the living room under the ceiling fan and the cats stayed outdoors. Tonight we can be back to normal.

:flowerforyou: Gayla, congratulations on losing those two pounds----slow and steady wins the race---the longest journey starts with a single step----for people like us with a long history of weight gain should celebrate every loss.

today is Brandy's birthday---she is four years old:bigsmile:

tomorrow is the last day of the month---a good day to check our progress and make some good goals for the next month, like drinking lots of water :drinker: :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:

    Marie,

I didn't think of the old egg and sidewalk trick when it was 108, but I'll bet any egg on the sidewalk that day would have taken a beating (sorry, ba-a-a-ad pun:bigsmile: )

Now the Toyota Matrix as an egg poaching device could inspire a new advertising campaign. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket...Buy a Toyota!!:noway:

Is that Madison Avenue I hear knocking at my door looking for the latest advertising campaign? Nah, didn't think so!!

As for shelters, there were cooling centers in Seattle and Portland metro areas, and the Meals on Wheels programs were delivering donated fans to homebound senior who requested them. The Humane Society even opened a cooling center for pets.

As for how this weather happens. We usually have most of our weather come in from the Pacific Ocean, so northwesterly winds are the norm, but the customary onshore flow was overwhelmed by easterly winds, and everyone who lives around here know the east wind means" HOT" in the summer, and if we get them in the winter, prepare for "COLD" The northwesterly winds can and often do bring our old friend "RAIN"--which a lot of people might be glad to see about now.

Well, that pretty much does it for weather, but I just saw a story that gives entire new meaning to that old saying "liar liar pants on fire" :smokin: Apparently, a guy in Seattle was shopping for fireplaces, of all things, when he discovered the cell phone in his pocket CAUGHT FIRE!! They figure the coins in his pocket combined with paper money and a warm battery produced the fire.:explode: I am glad I always carry my phone in a pocket without any keys or coins. It was always to avoid scratching up the phone's case, but it appears I have been avoiding fires all this time and didn't know it. Just when you think you have heard it all, something else happens that makes you say "no way>:noway:

    Good night all.

Jeffery, where are you? Hope all is well.

The normal cool coastal weather continued today---it was foggy in the morning. I wore a long sleeved shirt to line dance and was very comfortable. It warmed up a bit later but only into the low 70's. Jake and I took a walk about 7 PM and figured out that the walking route we take through our neighborhood is 2.4 miles. It takes us about 45 minutes and has some gentle uphill areas so there is a bit of a challenge. there's very little traffic and a few neighborsh walking their dogs on a leash.

We have a very pleasant weekend planned with visits with friends and some indoor and outdoor chores.

    Happy weekend to all:heart:

It is actually time for bed, but I thought I would check in and say hi. Busy morning, then went to the pool with my DIL and granddaughter. She amazes me, she took swim lessons and now has no fear of the water. She was jumping in over her head and more or less dog paddling back to the edge. I thought it was wonderful she did a great job. Last year she was so afraid and this year she is a entirely different person.

I have so many DVD's to make for people that I hope I get some free time this weekend. I take a lot of pictures and video and like to give DVD's to the people who will enjoy them.

I am almost back to the weight on my ticker but not quite. I think I have about two more pounds to lose to get to my goal. I am so happy that people have finally noticed I lost weight.

I still have not been exercising like I should at home, but I have been doing so much walking and today with my granddaughter walking in the pool. I think I am still burning calories but not as many as I would like. I am not really complaining though since I feel good and still try to eat good.

Tomorrow or is it later this afternoon we take Daisy for her second series of shots. I will be happy to have her get them so I can take her to the groomer and hopefully the dog park. She is doing okay with her puppy classes, I am just not sure I am happy with the class itself. I may switch to a one on one instructor to teach her a little be:laugh: tter. She is a nipper and constantly is nipping at my husband. She is pretty good with me, but he doesn't like to discipline her so she thinks he is a chew toy.

Time for bed, morning comes around too soon.
