Well today I finally broke and my husband and I joined a gym. We joined Urban Active, it is super nice and has lot of machines and other equipment as well as different classes and water aerobics.

The last couple of weeks has been kind of rough since my husband started a new job and his schedule has changed and will change again in a few weeks after he finishes his training.
I also got a job in the last few days after looking for nearly 4 months, it will be third shift so I am looking forward to trying to figure that all out.

With so much going on I haven't been eating the greatest and hardly exercising at all. Luckily I have only gained back a couple of pounds that I had lost. I hope to get that back off really quick.

(Now to be able to tell the trainer that we don't want do work with them on a regular bases only the one time free assessment deal, that should be a blast... NOT:ohwell: )

Great start! I would suggest trying to join a group fitness class that you really like. It keeps me motivated to go to the gym and it's fun. Many people only do the one training session. I would just say that you want to try it out solo and if in a few months you aren't seeing results on your own you would consider using the trainer again. Or just say thank you for the session and that's it. I am sure many trainers know that new signups are only going to do the one session. Economic times are tough right now so it won't hurt that trainer's feelings. Good luck!!!

I do NOT suggest group classes unless they are in the water. You need to start off very slow and can get discouranged easily in those classes.

Thinking....you might want to invest in a pedometer to track your steps. The experts suggestion everyone should walk 10,000 steps a day. That is a lot!

I have to disagree in part with this......Group classes can ne discouraging if you spend the class watching the other people rather than focusing on the instructor & yourself. I've had a gym membership for several years & can easily do 1.5 hrs of cardio with 45 mins of weights in between. I just took a kickboxing class to spice thing up a it kicked my *kitten*...There was a lot I couldn't do, I couldn't keep up the pace & had to breaks...What I noticed was that at least half the people there were in my shoes, including the lady I'd been talking to whose been taking the class every week for months. She gave me props at the end for doing as well as I did :)

You have to remember that they are meant to be hard so even advanced people are challenged. And they can be great cardio if you focus more on what you can do than can't do.

  • I plan on checking out a few classes but want to get my feet wet literally and plan to take the water aerobics class for some low impact stuff. I know what I can and can't do so I'll just have to see what really works for me. I am looking forward to getting started and having some fun with it.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

I have to say, I really enjoy the classes. Any class that I have ever taken has offered a varying degree of difficulty. If you arrive a couple minutes early, you can usually talk to the instructor and mention what you struggle with. If they know ahead of time what members are working with, they are usually really accomodating and will usually offer 2-3 different options (easy-med-difficult) to ensure that everyone in the class is able to participate and feel great at the end :)

I think the classes are great for two reasons, one--> everyone is there because they need that extra push that they maybe dont give themselves (no matter their fitness level) and two--> they are FUN and usually the hour tends to fly by a lot faster than it does on a treadmill!

Good Luck to everyone. Just remember that you will never know your limits unless you try :) I belive that everyone can do a class!!!

    Cheers
