Don't trust the machines. The best way to tell is to use a heartrate monitor.0

that depends on what your goal is Karissa. Working out hard enough is a term with very little meaning attached to it unless we know what the goal of the workout is.
By that I mean, are you looking to drop body fat, or are you looking to tone your body, or are you looking for athletic (oxygen efficiency would be a goal in running on a machine) increases...etc.
If all you're trying to do is drop body fat (which, with 5 lbs to lose, would be my guess) then I would concentrate on High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) if tone is your goal then plyometrics and explosive exercises would be good, if athletic increase is the goal then a varied routine of longer runs with medium levels of Maximal Heart Rate mixed with Shorter runs of High levels of Maximal Heart Rate are recommended.
All of these styles can be googled for plenty of results.
As to the calories burned, Amy is right. A heart rate montior is far more accurate (though still not 100% accurate) than a machine at the gym.0 -
Off topic but you look like britt spears (back in her pretty days)0
