The Price of Pleasure
has anyone else seen this? I viewed it in my Psychology of Women class last thursday and it really affected me. i just purchased it.
it is an explicity, honest look at the pornography and how our sexuality is socialized. it is really good and i think everyone should watch it...especially those who have seen a porno or two in their time. it is an important eye opener, trust me!

oh sorry, it is a documentary, there is a trailer and some clips on the website here:
http://thepriceofpleasure.com/
although the trailer doesn't really hit home, some good quotes from the movie are things like 'you can zip up your pants but you can't zip up your brain' and it talks about how violence all of a sudden becomes invisible when it is sexualized and how we carry this over into reality. people are prone to sexualize what they see in pornography whether they disagree with it or not...or else it wouldn't turn us on. and it is almost always violent physically or verbally towards women. and i totally see this, i have watched porn with and without my bf, and it does change the way we treat each other, hands down.
edit: i wanted to add, that it also places expectations on men as well, proposing that to be a man and sexual you need to be domineering and in control as well as a sexual beast...i am just obviously biased and on the womens side of this because i can understand that side more. but it does shape the behavior of men as well.0 -
WOW, that just gave me chills. I think they nailed it correct. thanks for sharing, I will have to do some checking to see if I can watch the documentary. I learned something new today, what a great feeling0

it totally is chilling! i had forgotten about that from the night that i watched it. i have seen a lot of porn, and it doesn't give you chills watching it, but discussing it, and labelling it, and emphasising the behaviors does give me chills, which is just so ****ed up overall!
it is really important, i feel like they should be playing this in high school, but apparently colleges have a hard enough time getting it into their classrooms0 -
I'm trying to watch the trailer now... but I'm at work and people keep coming into my office!!:grumble:0

yeah i guess i should've said that it is not work friendly although totally educational, some things are too stigmatized, which is why there is such a need to be educated on them i think0

There, I have watched it. Definitely hits the nail on the head!!! I think they are very degrading, although I have watched them too. I completely agree with you loathesome, it doesn't give you the chills watching it, but once you start discussing it, labelling it and emphasising the behaviors THAT gives you chills!!0
