5k on sunday, so nothing new there. However I've never really taken a break from running beforehand since I've had break days built into my running schedule. That has changed recently, and I'm now running 6 days a week. However, sunday would be day 6. So, I'm planning to not run today or tomorrow (unless it can't be avoided).
But since its primarily a rest day for my legs, does that mean I can still do core and arm workouts?

Not the day before a race. In my experience its an absolute rest day except maybe a walk. No strength training no running=)0

do arm today, you can do core both days, because core muscles are small and don't stay fatigued long. Arm muscles will stay fatigued for up to 24 hours, so you don't want to do them right before a race. Although a 5K probably isn't long enough to affect you a lot with regards to muscle fatigue. This your first one Mark? You going for time? Let me know how you make out. I gotta book a race soon, I'm feeling lazy this month. August is always my worst month anyway.0 -
Second actual race, but I've run about 6 5k's in the past 2 weeks. My lowest time atm is 36 minutes, no where near where I want to be. I won't let myself start training for the 10k til I'm at 25 minutes or below on a 5k :mad:
I'll go ahead and work on arms and core then tonight, and just let myself relax tomorrow. Just hate not being able to get my endorphin fix.0 -
Wow, Dude. Good progress. Look's like you're getting it done. I know you were asking for advice, but I want to offer congrats on racing so much. I'm sure you'll shave that time off.0

nice, well, remember, you always run better times during real races than in training. That's almost a given. I know I never broached 22 minutes when I was training, and bam! race day last year, I ran 21:46
that's about 18 seconds faster than my best training time. that's a HUGE difference in a 5K.
When my foot heals, I'm gonna try to get below 20 minutes. Then I can run with the big dogs in the front of the pack, you know the guys, the ones that always win the race with times like 16:57 or 17:03. Hey I may not win, but at least I'll be able to see them when they cross the line!0 -
Good luck on your race on Sunday! I am doing one in two weeks and I am nervous. I walked one before but never ran one. Probably won't be able to run this whole one either but I gotta try!0

You CAN do it Amanda! I think the livestrong 5k eliminated the "walking is ok" train of thought. When you're behind an elderly woman who is missing a leg, or a 10 year old who has lymphoma but neither one of them stops running or gives up - your being tired/in pain doesn't seem like a worthwhile reason to quit.0
