Does anyone have a suggestion for a good way to stretch my IT band? My right hip really hurts after running and pretty much the whole next day afterwards. Are there some good stretches for me to do before and/or after to help alleviate this?

Get a foam roller and use it after every run. Look after it before you end up missing 6 weeks of running like I did last year.......(I'm also seeing a massage therapist who works wonders)0 -
I had a lot of trouble with my IT band earlier this year. The thing that helped most was a foam roller. I still do some of the stretches, but I think I'd still be unable to run if I hadn't started using the foam roller 2-3x a day.
I like this stretch:

Where do I get a foam roller? I hear that and picture a painting roller! LOL What exactly am I looking for?0

A foam roller is a large, dense piece of foam shaped like a giant rolling pin. You can get one at any fitness store.0

I think you can only make a clickable link to pages within MFP... not 100% sure though.
Anyway, here's someone foam rolling:
My running store sells them... and yeah, pretty easy to find them online0 -
Thanks everyone! Looks like a run to a sporting goods store is on the schedule!0

IT Band stretches are always good and I think you should check out some of what's offered here. However, from your description are you sure it's your IT Band. Have you ever had your gait analyzed? If you have poor running posture that may have more to do with it than any muscle issues. I'd say it might be worth going and having the analysis done. Even if it isn't the cause of your issues it's a great source of information that will help you improve your running ability.0 -
Hmm...good information. I'm GUESSING it's my IT band because before I started running (when I was walking a lot) had this same issue only on my left side. Went to my DR (who is also an OD) and he said it was my IT band. But oddly enough once I started running consistently, it totally went away on my left side but it's now hurting my right side.0
