Hurt my knee

So I'm at the end of my first week of rowing tryouts. We did some running earlier this week, and on the second day I had pretty severe knee pain. I let the coach know, and he's been going a little easier on me as far as stuff that is really hard on knees and recommends icing it at night. So, couple of problems, one, I don't have ice. I only have a mini fridge in my apartment and it takes like two days for it to actually freeze any ice. I'd go and get an ice pack but I'd have to walk to the store, which I don't feel entirely comfortable doing in the dark. Second, I can't just NOT do anything with it. We have a run assessment in a week, and I really have to get out and run to prepare for it, but my knee is just not having it right now.
So what can I do to make it stop hurting so I can continue putting my all into these dang tryouts?

Any chance you could see a physio? I hurt both my knees recently and physio got me back dancing & running within 4 & 6 weeks respectively. Without it I'd have been out much longer.0
