I've been using a sledgehammer to mash aluminum cans for recycling (our can crusher's messed up). Set them up, squash them down.

Does anyone know how many calories I might have burned by repeatedly lifting a sledgehammer? I don't see anything comparable in the strength-training list.

I am sure you are burning a few calories doing that... I suppose it would partially depend on the weight of the sledge hammer. For a true aerobic burn, activities involving a larger portion of the body would be optimum. I would count that as a bonus activity and leave it alone were it me. I think it probably does your arm more good than deriving aerobic benefit from it; that being said... Your heard probably is pumping pretty good swinging a sledge hammer around so you are benefitting some aerobically.

    "swinging a sledge hammer around"

Well, it was more like lifting and dropping. I'm not sure how much this sledgehammer weighs. I just know that it was good enough to smash cans with, since our can-crusher doesn't work well.
