God I hate the mods on this site.

So I was looking through the "No homo?" thread started in the Chit chat area, where a guy was expressing his disapproval of the term and how much it is used in the forums. Well for the first 500 posts the mods let it go on in spite of all the trolling and nasty remarks. Part two of the thread rolls around it is abruptly closed after twenty or so more responses. Here is the reasoning:

I wanted to offer a brief explanation for the locking of this thread. It was locked rather for how the thread ended than how it started.

The forum guidelines include this item:

4. Show Respect to All Groups and Individuals

No derogatory references to sex, gender, weight, body-type, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation, or endorsement of violence against any person or group, even if couched in humor, will be permitted. This includes expressing stereotypes about any group or community.

With respect,
Rachel

Coincidentally, and I use that term loosely, she decided to lock the thread AFTER people starting throwing words like "Jew" and
"beaner" around. Yeah so never mind the 500 posts before where homosexuals were being trolled. If she were truly following the guidelines, she should have closed that ****ing topic long ago.

This is nothing less than I've come to expect from mods from the site. As a contrast, just wanted to say I regularly post on 2+2 (an extremely male dominated and rather chauvinistic poker discussion site) and even THEY have a much, much lower tolerance for homophobic remarks. I guess I just need to stick to the Success Stories side of this site because I always see stuff that pisses me off elsewhere here.

MFP certainly isn't known for it's acceptance of lgbtq people, concerns and topics. When I first joined a few years ago, before groups were created, threads with an lgbt flavour were continually locked because they were "too controversial" which was ridiculous because the threads that I saw and were part of were simply people wishing to connect within this community. Hopefully MFP will take up the challenge and realise that complacency about bigotry and discrimination when in positions of power is discriminatory in itself.

I'm one of those geeks who actually read the "standards of conduct" prior to activating my account, so I was absolutely shocked after seeing a few threads. Now I just stay off of the main stuff and stick to my little teams; lgbt, clean eating and Florida.

    Peace!
