With gardens exploding, we are getting salsa from everyone! Does anyone know a healthier alternative for eating salsa without using tortilla chips?

I use it as salad dressing and have been known to just eat it with a spoon!

I use crisp celery and salsa. I still get that "Crunch" effect.

Top some grilled chicken. I love it in my salad. I use it instead of dressing. You can also freeze it in smaller baggies and use it when you make meatloafs, burgers, chili or soups.

Slow cooker chicken in salsa (do a search on MFP or elsewhere for recipes), on baked potatoes, with naan crisps (140 calories/28g), with cottage cheese, as a condiment with burgers or other meats. I hope others have suggestions. I am about to make some and can just eat it from a spoon!

    Anyone have suggestions for tomatillos?

Dip for carrots? Better with coins or strips than whole baby carrots - it's hard to scoop it with a rounded-off chunk.

I use 34 Degrees whole grain crispbread. 35 calories for 9 chips and they taste really good with salsa. :)
You can find them at Walmart.

I fold it into an omelet or put it on scrambled eggs for breakfast. Also add it to veggies i'm going to grill up. Put the veggies in aluminum foil, add some salsa and grill till done. Wonderful flavor.

Dip in with your carrot sticks, celery sticks (any other raw, fresh vegetables); cucumber slices, green beans (I'd blanch them), asparagus (blanch again), sweet bell pepper strips (red, yellow, orange)
  • Mixed in with egg whites, top chicken and on top of lettuce for a salad dressing.I am loving the potato idea.

I eat salsa with almost anything. Love it on eggs, chicken, veggies, pasta, you name it. I also make baked pita chips with the flax seed pitas and dip those.

I use salsa for everything. 2 Tbsp on a garden salad is usually only 10 aclories or so, and it's plenty to coat everything. I put it on rice and baked potatos, too (butter and sour cream are verboten!). The slow cooker ideas are good, too. You can always freeze some and use it for all day cooking this winter. Use it instead of ketchup on hamburgers and hot dogs. Endless possibilities!

I take 1/2 cup salsa & mix it with 2 tbsp of non fat sour cream and top off my baked potatoe...so yummy with that touch of spice :-)
  • These are great ideas! I will definitely be trying some. I make great fresh salsa, but hardly eat it because I don't want the calories from chips. Thanks for bringing it up!
  • cucumber slices!!
