Frustration...

A little long…..please bear with me while I voice my frustration here in the “privacy” of the MFP forums….
Something that I’d really like to say to certain people in my life:
“Yes….I am obese, but I’m not stupid and I really get frustrated when those around me….work/home/etc….look at me like I’m an idiot when we are talking about ways to lose weight. Let’s make one thing clear…..you must eat to lose weight! Period! Starving yourself and working out like a mad man/woman is not the answer! I don’t need my friends/family/coworkers telling me….or insinuating….that I don’t know what I’m talking about just because I’m overweight.
I may be obese, but I am well on my way to healthy and it has taken me YEARS to get where I am mentally to succeed in this journey. YEARS to do my research. YEARS of fad diets. YEARS to learn the right and the wrong ways to lose weight and keep it off.
What I need is your support. A “good job” or a “you look great” goes a lot farther than talking down to me because of what knowledge I offer up and you choose to ignore.”
Just because a person is obese, or even a few pounds over the healthy weight for their build/frame, doesn’t mean that they are stupid. Some of us have the knowledge and we have the tools, but for whatever reason, we are holding ourselves back.
One day….I will look back on my journey….not just a journey of weightloss success, but a journey of rediscovery. A rediscovery of myself. In the end, I will be a better mother, wife and friend because of the lessons I learned along the way.
Thank you for letting me vent. I feel better now.

I feel ya. Just because I haven't lost the weight yet doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about! It's like saying you're going to go the gym and have someone SNEER at you because clearly you aren't some ripped, flat bellied babe or hunk and don't "belong there"! I've even had friends second guess my advice and go asking other people to confirm it when I've gently recommended they up their water uptake or informed them how many calories they should aim for a day when they ask. It's like suddenly because I'm overweight my knowledge on weight loss is completely invalid! Sometimes I just feel like yelling: WEIGHT LOSS DOESN'T BLOODY HAPPEN OVERNIGHT YOU NUMPTIES!
On the flip side darling, you're doing absolutely fantastic so bugger them! It's you who's living a healthier lifestyle and you who's reaping all the benefits while they sit and whinge and roll their eyes. Bitterness never gets anyone anywhere, and they'll soon find being just plain rude doesn't pay off.0 -
I can relate to your frustrations - as I am sure everyone on MFP can!
All I can say is - keep up the good work and ignore the dumb-*kitten*!
You COULD tell the next person who mentions it that you have already lost 150 pounds and gained it back just so you have a challenge. lol

Thank you for posting this and opening my eyes. My husband who at one time was in excellent shape and knows Alot about fitness etc ( before i ever knew him) is always trying to tell me what i should do or not do etc....sometimes making ME feel stupid. But, i would always refuse his help or knowledge because he is morbidly overweight with health issues. I figure i cant take advice from a do as i say not as i do type of person.
I can see now that it was a wrong attitude to have. I am ready and willing to be on this journey with any sound advice i can get. He is not...but it does not make him stupid. I will go and tell him right now how sorry i am for looking down on him because i am trying and he is not.
Thank you again

This touched my heart. Thank you. As we all know, each person's journey is their own and only they can take that first step toward healthy. We all have people in our lives that will make our journey more difficult, but in the end it only makes us stronger.
My hope is that your husband will decide to take that first step and join you in the quest for a healthier and happier life! Good luck!0
