I am pretty sick. But I will feel bad if I don't work out. Is it okay if I do work out? Advice please!!

I was exactly the same way. Had a really nasty cold a few months ago and worked out anyway. I doubt if the workout really did my body any good.

Recently, I had a cold and took a few days off to feel better before working out. I think I gained more by resting than pushing through a workout when I was sick.

Give your body a rest, it's asking for one if it's sick.

I believe that if it's in your head (a cold) it's ok to work out but if it's in your chest, you need to take a day of rest. I don't get down time unless I'm horrendously sick, but I usually don't workout if I'm feeling sick. I mean, truly sick, not this, oh, I have the sniffles BS. If I can go to work, generally, I can also workout.

I had a nasty cold, I had no energy to exercise. I tried and it was a fail. So I gave myself a few days to rest and I was fine after that.
  • Thanks guys. My throat and my tummy feel real uneasy. I feel guilty but you're right. One day of rest won't kill me. My body will be thanking me tomorrow.

Honestly if you work out at a gym and you're feeling that way then stay home. I'm not trying to be mean but I wouldn't want to be working out next to someone who was feeling ill and could be coming down with strep throat, the flu or some nasty stomach bug and I'd be pretty mad if I came down with said illness.

If you're feeling crappy then stay home and rest.

    Above the neck, work out.
    Below the neck, rest.

Consider if your illness is contagious or not before heading out to the gym. Nobody wants your cold or flu and it's just not cool.

A day or 2 of rest will probably help you get well faster, and it's not going to sabotage all your efforts.

Your body need to rest when it is sick. ALSO, if you work out in a public gym, you are doing EVERONE a disservice by spreading your germs. Grab a blanket and some soup and go watch TV!

Depends how sick...but be aware...nobody wants you spreading your sick germs around at the gym (even if you probably got it there!)
  • You guys bring up many good points. I am in the serving industry and now I feel real foolish for thinking I can lift weights and serve till 1am. I think one day of lots of rest will put me back on my A game. This site is awesome. You guys are like my fitness internet moms. :)
