Do you know of any heavy duty containers?

I want to stop eating so much processed food. I've been living off of 100 calorie snack packs and lean cuisine for the past three weeks. I've bought some great cookbooks that I'm dying to try, but I can't seem to find the time to actually prepare any of the meals. I'm thinking that I could possibly make a week's worth of breakfast and lunch (at least) on Sunday. What's the best container to buy? I need something to keep my meals fresh for at least four or five days.
Also, when do you guys make time to cook? Do you make your meals in advance? And if you do, do you eat the same thing everyday?
Thanks!

Hi. I tried eating prepared meals with only 300-400 a time but found I actually gained weight because they were so processed!!
How about you spend a saturday or sunday cooking up whole batches of healthy home made food then freezing them in tubs rather than trying to get ones to last for 5 days. Frozen food will last a long time and you can take one out of the freezer and put it in the fridge in the morning then when you get in in the evening you only have to heat it through!
I tend to buy containers from bargain shops.0 -
I use the ziploc or Glad semi disposeable containers. I like having a bunch of the cheap ones in multiple sizes around then if something happens to it I won't freak out ( like I used to with my tupperware) I tend to make on the weekend and then keep 2-3 days in the fridge and freeze some for later. turkey Chili is great to freeze, as well as cooked chicken breasts (dress them up in different ways, marinara, salsa, in whole wheat tortillas for wraps, in a salad (although I hate salads) stir fry.
I have my hubby grill a huge package from costco and work that in for weeks from the freezer.
good luck!:flowerforyou:0 -
You have the right idea here. I rarely eat processed foods and the weight melted off when I did that. I use pyrex containers. You could even make single servings and put them in the freezer. That way it would last much longer than 4 or 5 days. Also, you could make several things and have variety in the freezer. Just don't forget about your food

My husband and I cook dinner together every night but dinners are typically left overs or a turkey sandwich and yogurt.0 -
If you're going to reheat the food, try pyrex glass containers. They're a bit pricier, but they last a lot longer than plastic. They don't stain, they don't melt, and they don't leach chemicals into your food. For things that you're not going to put in the microwave, plastic containers from Glad or Ziploc are fine.
I'm also trying to cut out most of the processed food so I can keep my sodium intake way down. It can be a lot of work to do all that preparation on your own! What I've learned though is that it's a lot easier if you plan a whole week ahead everything you're going to eat, for every meal and snack. I also do some of the prep work for dinner either on the weekend or the night before if I am planning something more time consuming. And I always pack my lunch the night before so I'm not scrambling around in the morning. I've taken to making a big pot of soup on the weekend and taking it every day so packing my lunch is a real no-brainer and takes me all of five minutes. Since I eat the same thing all week for lunch, I make sure that dinner is more exciting and I eat something different every night.0 -
We use a set like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Easy-Piece-Storage-Containers/dp/B002RSO2PW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1271263814&sr=8-1
Microwave, Freezer, and Dishwasher safe. Haven't had any stain, discolor, warp, or crack yet.0 -
I have been freezing leftover in baggies or use my food saver. I just measure and weigh everything for one serving and mark it. Leftover pasta, sauce, chicken. I tend to eat leftovers from super for lunch but when I get in a jam I just grab pasta or sauce or get a jar of alfredo sauce measure the serving size pour over your frozen chicken, frozen pasta and frozen broccoli. Or make a batch of chili, taco meat beef or chicken, meatloaf.
You could also you canning jars to freeze in. If you are going to be reheating glass is saver.
Sometimes I will cook on the weekend. But when I'm making something I will make extra serving so I can freeze it.
For breakfast I eat the Kashi oatmeal or Kashi cereal. I like the blueberry one a lot. Hard boiled eggs, fried egg on a 100 calorie english muffin or bagel with cheese sometime ham or bacon. A parfait measure your friut and pour in vanilla yogurt. I add the garnole right before I eat it.0 -
Oh my god, I can't even believe it never occurred to me to freeze servings! Duh!

So, just to make sure, I can freeze just about any meal? How long do you'd think something would last?0 -
If you use a food saver it would last longer because you are getting the air all out and it is less likely to get freezer burn. It doesn't stay in the freezer long in my house use it up pretty quickly. But it is a way to get some variety in your meals for the week. Some things don't freeze great either like potatoes they get a little grainy.0

Foods can last from 1 to 3 months in the freezer. It's great that you'll be taking the time to cook your own meals. The easiest thing to do is plan for the week ahead. I often cook a big batch of something and eat one portion straight away and freeze individual portions to eat over the next few weeks.
Also, it seems from your post that you don't have much time to cook. You could try and do things that don't take much time to prepare like a veggie omelette. You can buy pre cut fresh veggies and that saves some time. I also try and have some frozen veggies in the freezer all the time, they usually don't take much time to cook and you don't have to worry about them going bad, I think things like peas, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, beans...
Things that freeze well are lasagne, bolognese sauce, marinated chicken, chilli, veggie soups (but no potatoes as ltlhmom said), cauliflower cheese..0
