question about heart rate monitors on gym equipment

On the equipment at the gym, there are silver handles that if you hold will tell you your heart rate...is this the same thing as a heart rate monitor? How does it work, because the calories burned said over 200, but when I put my hand on the heart rate monitor, it said around 180, and when I enter the workout into MFP, it says 173.
Also, when I did a different workout, the hear rate monitor on the machine said around 150 and the carlories burned said around 140, but on MFP, it says only 87 calories
are any of these correct/more approximate?

They may be close if you entered your stats into the machine before you began exercising. There should be a way for your to enter your age, weight, height, and sex. If you did not do so, the machine is running the logarithms based on someone else's body stats.0

I do enter my info into the equipment but I don't use the "Calories Burned" number. I do however keep track of my heart rate (as I do not have a hrm). I figure my average heart rate for the entire workout, then when I get home I plug all of my information in at this website: http://heartcalories.com/
Although the Ellpitical Trainer gave me a number very close, I change my MFP "Calories Burned" to the number I received from this site. MFP had me over 800 while the website had me only at 570! :noway:
Hopefully this helps!! Good luck!! :happy:0 -
In my personal experience, the readouts from the machines even with age, weight and target HR entered is very off from my HRM readings.0

I find that the gym equipment is about 30-40% higher then my HRM in calorie counts0
