Just some advice needed here please. I joined the gym about 2 months ago, and started running again, have run in the past so not a stranger to it.

Ever since my knee caps have started to hurt quite a bit, and also now while just walking. I wear supports when I run, and they dont seem too bad, one of my knee caps when I run so then I stop. When I take the supports off and just walk then the other one starts.

Any ideas on what it could be, what should I do? Shall I stop running for a bit and use other equipment or go to docs?

Thanks alot.

Don't try to run through that pain, you could damage your knees. Lots of people with knee problems move over to swimming as it is a lot less stressful on the knees, but just as good exercise.

I remember seeing a report of a woman who had had bad knees, but trained through it anyway. Eventually, her knees were in a really bad way, they never got better, just worse. She had to have an operation on both her knees and the operation was on film. Afterwards, she watched this film and was shocked at how bad a state her knees were.

Her comment after seeing the film was that if she had known how bad her knees had got, there is no way she would ever have continued to run on them, nothing was worth it.

That always stuck in my mind.

I say go to a doc, especially one an ortho who specializes in sport injuries. If your knees are that bad,
do not move to the elliptical. When I had a torn meniscus, my ortho told me the elliptical was the
worse machine to move to. His recommendation was the stationary bike. At first I didn't think that
made sense, but wouldn't you know it, he was right.

GO to a sports injury clinic and get it checked out.

    Don't run through the pain.

Get your gait/trainers checked out. Its amazing how many niggles/injuries are caused because your trainers are not suitable for your degree of pronation (rotation of the foot when it hits the ground)

Thank you everybody for your replies. I will stop the running and see how it goes. If it is still painful after a few weeks, I will go to a specialist and get them to have a look at it. Shame, I really love running and just started to get back into it again.

I dont like using the elliptical, I think its boring :( but will start up rowing and possibly the bike, that to me is also boring. Obviously doing intervals and stuff still.

Have been using the stairmaster as well (with paddles), I assume this is ok still?

    Thanks, Rach x
