Polar HRM or Fitbit or Fuelband or UP or what?

I've been using my Timex HRM and getting really frustrated with it as it is not reading accurately and I am ready to throw it out the window! I'm ready to purchase a better one, but am not sure which direction to go in. I have been doing a little research online but would like to see what real people are actually having success with? Any recommendations? I'm looking for something that will accurately record my heart rate so I can know how many calories I have burned during each workout. Thanks in advance for your input! I really appreciate it!

I have a Polar FT4 and a Fitbit. I use the HRM for anything the Fitbit can't track. The fitbit tracks steps, stairs/elevation, and sleep (though it's really just tracking how much you move). The sleep is interesting to see. I have a co-worker with one and we get very different results. My fitbit is the "One" so it clips to a bra strap or you can put it in your pocket. I can wear it and the HRM at the same time. I like having both. The Fitbit won't monitor HR. You might be able to find something that does HR and steps at the same time. The Fitbit and HRM cost me roughly $150 for both off Amazon.0

I am looking for a devise for tracking accurately what I burn during my workouts.. so is Polar FT4 the one to go? It seems like the popular choice. I have the fitbit one but it's just steps and although it gives me a calorie number I feel like it's over estimated.0

Polar FT4s are popular because it's a trusted brand name and fairly inexpensive and easy to find. The key to a good HRM is that it has both a chest strap (for more accurate heart rate reading) transmitter and the wrist band receiver unit. Also it takes in to account a good deal of data about the user - gender, height, weight, age - all of which contribute to a more accurate estimate of calories burned.
The Fitbit is more for all day reading of calorie burn. You'd have to do more research on the Fuelband or see if you get responses here but from what I've read, they're not much more accurate than the Fitbit.
I'd recommend clicking on search above and typing in the different types and reading the responses.0 -
I can't speak to any of the others, but I just got my Polar FT4 in the mail yesterday. I got it off Amazon for $65.00. I used it last night for the first time when I went running, and it had NO problems accurately picking up my HR. I am very happy with it... of course, that's just one day of use, though.
Good luck!0 -
I just got an UP and as far as I know it doesn't monitor HR however I could just be being completely dim I love it though0

Thanks everyone, I might go for the Polar FT4! (Except it's like USD113 here.. :grumble: )0

Can you buy from Amazon? They really do have the best prices sometimes. I got the female ugly beige/bronze one because it was the cheapest of the colors. I use the HRM on machiens with their own HRM and they do stay in sync. I get less calories on the FT4, not surprisingly, and use those. I really love it for Yoga since there is nothing to really tell you what you'll burn. There are so many different levels of Yoga. I get signifcant differences based on how hard I am working.0

I love my polar FT4! It's really motivational too....I usually set a calorie goal and keep working at it until I reach it. It makes it a lot more motivating to see how many calories you are actually burning.0

I've had HRM and FitBit and now I'm using BodyMedia Core. It fits on your upper arm and is by far the most accurate device I've used. It syncs with MyFitnessPal and that makes it really helpful. I also set my exercise goals with it and it also measures my sleep and quality of sleep. Very helpful if you have sleep apnea. Fitbit did that too, but it also showed I walked over 100 steps at night and it wasn't accurate on my dail walk step count either. We have a mapped walking trail where I live that is exactly 2 miles.0

That's awesome, coz my fitbit really can't detect anything with yoga (obviously). I am getting the blue one!0 -
you are probably walking in your sleep. I mean while you sleep. My legs move all night long I bet I do a couple of miles a night. LOL0

I wear a Jawbone Up daily and when I work out I throw on my Polar HRM. I LOVE FITNESS GADGETS lol!!!0 -
Got my polar ft4!! So I have a question, since I have to wet the electrode areas of the strap for it to detect my heart rate, does this mean I can't wear the chest strap all day say for 24 hrs to see exactly how much I burn in total? It only works when I'm working out and sweating?0

I don't have to wet mine to get a reading but I only wear it during exercise...0

HRM will not give you a 24 hour figure which is anywhere near accurate as they only work for cardio exercise. Look at the Bodymedia fit if you want something to wear all day.0 -
Thanks!!
Edit: I just tested it. Did biking for 5 mins and it says "27 cals". Is that 27 cals total? Or 27 on top of what I burn just sitting there doing nothing?0
