How many calories burned in a run/walk

My exercise consists of putting on my iPod and walking one song and running one song, then that continues for about 45 minutes...I'm finding it difficult to determine the amount of calories I'm burning. There is no equivalent that I've found in the exercise list for a combination of these two. Can anyone help? I've been estimating about 350 but I really don't know.

Running for me burns very roughly 10 cals per minute, but that's flat out, full speed.

Do you know how far you go during the 45 mins?

Try using runkeeper or an app like that. They are fairly close in approximation to my HRM. I will say, when I was first starting running, before I had an HRM, I counted up the minutes walking vs. running and put them separately into MFP using the MFP amounts. At that time, I was quite heavy still and MFP amounts were actually an underestimate for me (I learned that once I got an HRM).

If you don't have a HRM or an available tracking app, keep track of your time and how far you went. If you don't know how far you went, there are websites that you can use to map your route. I know Spark People has one, or used to, that will estimate a calorie burn as well.

I reckon on 90cals per kilometre for me - HRM and Endomondo also have it about the same.

    depends on your weight too

    Running burns 0.72 KCal/mi/lb
    Walking burns 0.57 KCal/mi/lb

So if you run 1 mile, and weigh 100 lbs, you burn 72 KCal. If you weigh 100 lbs and walk 1 mile, you burn 57 KCal.

This is great, thanks for all your responses. I forgot to say I do use "Map my Run.com" and estimate my route is just under 5 kilometers. I will look into an app that acts like a heart rate monitor. Thanks for the suggestions!

There really isn't an app that acts like a heart rate monitor, but Runkeeper will estimate your calorie burns based on your height, weight, gender, etc. and the route you take (or if on a treadmill the distance you cover in what time). I've found it close enough to my HRM most of the time.

Without a HRM go with 100 calories per mile.

The running programs such as mapmyrun, runtastic, runkeeper, etc... tend to over estimate calories burned. I have seen runkeeper over estimate by 200 or more sometimes.

    When I started my run/walk, I was also told about 100 calories/mile.
However, I am now running 6 min and walking 1 min. Doing this, I burn about 130-140 calories per mile.
So, for a 5k distance, I usually hover at 400 calories or so. I'm currently 185.5 lbs.
