Ok, so I have heard that no matter how much sodium you eat, if you drink 8-10 glasses of water daily, that will "flush out" the sodium. Is that true or just a myth? What do you guys think?

Frankly, I think it depends on your body. I drink at least 80-100 oz of water a day regularly and if my sodium intake goes above 2500 mg, I retain water. That's just the way it is for me.

    YMMV

  • Well, you know what they say about opinions...but here's mine. I think water helps with the bloating we may get from too much sodium, but I don't think that it "flushes" out the sodium. At least not enough to justify not reducing your sodium intake.
  • I don't know, but one thing I'm certain of from experience is drinking lots of water seems to boost my weight loss from week to week!

I like to think it's true LOL

Besides last week, I usually drink 10 to 16 cups of water, usually drink more when my sodium intake was high for the day.

I weigh myself daily and the high sodium intake from the previous day doesn't affect the scale (making the number go high) since I drank so much water. I either maintain or see some loss =)
  • I have been averaging 10 glasses of water daily, but have to watch my sodium intake due to hypertension. How much sodium is too much?

Well sodium is essential for your body to function. You definitely need your allotted sodium if you are very active/working out because you will be losing electrolytes. It is important to drink enough to keep you hydrated, and it will "flush" out some of the sodium, just be careful that you are getting a healthy balance of water, sodium, and potassium because they are all linked. I will try to find an article about the sodium-potassium relationship...
